Subject: Too much oil/Is this a bad thing IP: Logged
Message: I have the 3.9 v-6 and the owners manual says it takes 4 quarts and i put in 5 quarts because i thoght that is what it took. Will this harm the engine and should i drain it? Thanks

Message: I will NOT harm your engine. Maybe if you forgot that you had already put oil in and filled it with another 5 quarts you would have to worry about causing the oil to foam. That happens when the crank comes in direct contact with the oil and starts to whip it up like an egg beater.

Message: Over-filling by a quart is an old road-racer trick used when stock oil pans must be retained without mods, or one just isn't available. It adds insurance that the oil pickup will not be uncovered in hard cornering, braking, and acceleration. So, no biggie.

Message: If your oil is foaming it is a bad thing.
Pumps are lazy in that if they can suck up air or oil they will suck air.
Foam is air mixed into the oil.
Try overfilling an automatic trans to the point that the planitary gearsets churn the fluid and see if it slips.
Overfull is just as bad as underfull.
