Message: I currently own a 2002 dodge dakota sxt 4x4. I've done a few modifications such as: k&n cold air induction system, euro headlight markers, and 285-60-18 wheels and tires. I have a small club of friends that we all have dakotas, and I'm the only one with the 3.9 v6. From my experience, low end power is the same from the driver's seat. Pretty much the difference between the v6 and v8 is high end power, just slightly. The biggest advantage is gas mileage. I've tested this with both engine's will pulling the same trailer, and the v-6 did better on fuel consumption, but with more shifting than compared to the v-8. I love my truck, but from what I've seen and heard the v6 does just as much as the v8 without the gas gussling prices. I hope this helped, let me know if you have any other questions. Ryan

Message: Ryan was drunk when he posted that. I also have an 02 sxt. It only comes with the 3.9. I'm not even sure if the new daks will have an SXT model but if they do I imagine it will be with the 3.7.
Like Ryan I also love my truck, but it's not comparable to a V8. The V8 clearly has more power across the eniter range of the power band, that's not even argueable. When pulling a trailer the lack of power in the V6 is even more evident, which shouldn't come as a suprise. What is suprising to me is that the V6 has only slightly better mileage then the V8. Especially the new 4.7's. I bought my truck because it was cheap. I do like it, but I won't be buying a V6 again unless it's in a much smaller truck.

Message: I have an 02 sxt and I love it 3.9 auto RC
i just want to say that the dak is a pretty heavy truck and it takes a certain amount of power to do the work of hauling it around. power takes fuel and at a certain point it is quite possible the smaller engine would get worse milage. ie towing a boat with a quad cab 4 wheel drive with a bunch of fishing buddies as for the 4.7 v8, its a more modern design and i would hope it would be more efficient.

Message: I have an 03 quad cab 4x4 w/a 3.9L and I think its the worst eng. dodge ever built. Ive had it to the dealer 3 times because I thought it should have more power than what it does. And if you turn on the a/c you might as well have a 4cyl. This is the worst excuse for an engine I have ever owned. If I wasnt so far up to my ass in this truck I would go and buy a f-150 and at least get something that could pull my small boat.

Message: chris, what did you expect? a QC 4x4 Auto? you didn't test drive it before you bought it?
i have an '00 QC 4x2 w/ 3.9 and 5 spd manual.
IMO, dodge should have never offered the 3.9 in a QC 4x4 auto. mine runs around fine and hauls what i want(bags of quikrete, plywood, etc...)
if i could have(bought mine used), the only thing else i would have done was get 3.92 gears.

Message: yep, the 3.92's are the answer. I also have the 5 speed 3.9, but unlike many, I have a standard cab, short box base truck (no ac, but a darn good heater). I have done the cold air thing, upped the throttle body to the v8 size, put on a high flow cat back exhaust, pulled the clutch fan and installed an electric one (and dropped the thermostat to 180 degrees), as well I have lowered the rear by 2 inches (it kept scraping the clouds) and put on home made traction bars. I have probably the lightest Dak out there and believe me, this thing can haul arse. I'm no street racer in any shape or form, but I can leave a trail behind me all the way into 3rd. Come the spring, I am popping for a set of 3.92's (to rid myself of the 3.21 currently in there), and hopefully a Trax Lock LSD. I expect I will be keeping my own with the V8's then.
Oh, and did I say "I love my truck" too?

Message: my club cab 4x4 5 speed 3.55 geared 3.9 dakota with a/c runs just fine.the 3.9 with 5 speed and 3.55 gears has very good power.no its not a v8 but its still a very capable engine.i like low end touque engines and the 3.9 developes a good amout of touqe right off idle.i can hardly tell the difference in power when the a/c is on but i can sure feel the cold air.in north carolina you nutz if you dont have a/c.and you will have no resale value.
i love v8s but im a little partial to 6 bangers too.the chevy 4.3 is a good touqe enginee also and my favorite is the old 4.2(258ci)inline 6 from jeep.now that bad boy gets power right away at something like 1800 rpm .
