Subject: 2wd to 4wd POSSIBLE? IP: Logged
Message: What is involved in upgrading a 1991 3.9L Ext Cab 2wd into a 4wd. Is this possible? Would I have to change all suspension? I have a 93 3.9L reg cab 4x4 that I can strip from. Will this work out or am I getting in way over my head... I want the ext cab but must have 4x4 HELP!

Message: Generally you're getting in waaaaay over your head...but if you got all the stuff to do it (a spare 4wd), it may make a cool project and prolly would be cheaper than if you had to buy all the parts. Though the easiest method is trade in the 2wd for a 4wd...

Message: i wouldnt reccomend trying it. you would need the front axle, suspension, transfer case, driveshafts, floor shifter assembly and alot of time and money. i think it is more economical to just buy a 4wd. (but trust me the 4wd is nice!)

Message: Is that what ir takes? I have all the parts. The 4x4 parts will come off a 1993 reg cab and be placed in a 1991 ext cab. Will the only custom job be extending the driveshaft to the rear axle?

Message: It's not really that hard I just did it to a 1991 2wdrive ext cab and made it a 4wd .
cut the frame at the factory welds right under the drivers door and add the section from the 4wd dak to the rear sec of the 2wd and you don't have to change suspension, all you have to do is add the wiring from the 4wd part into the main wire harness following the same color code
have a drive shaft made for the rear about 130.00 and everyting will fir right in the same

Message: Could I just extend the frame on the 4wd and put the ext cab body on it? I know I would have to extend the drive shaft. Is this possible because it sound like it would be a lot easier and cost effective if it is possible. Any suggestions I am near Chicago, IL.

Message: I agree, if i felt like putting money in my truck i would put in the 318 followed by a solid front axle. the stock suspension flexes like crap in the front. i would show you the pic of my truck on the flex ramp but its way to pitiful
