Subject: another 360 swap question IP: Logged
Message: Hey all. im new to dakotas and lookin for some info. i have a 88 3.9 with a 3spd auto. my dad has a full size 85 van with a 360 i can probably have. now, i'll have to make motor mounts right? will i use everything from the van? like tranny, wiring harness, ecu, maybe rear end? thanks for any help

Message: also the dak is a 4x4. what about my dak transfer case? will it work and/or hold up to the 360? i know nothing about 4wd so hopefully it will all work. thanks for any help

Message: The stock tranny would benefit from a solid rebuild, then it'd handle the 360, but if you can do a single pull from the van including the tranny, that'd probably be easier and more cost-effective. Just be sure, whatever you do, to use the torque converter that matches the 360. You will need to make mounts, or get the bolt-in kit at engine-swaps.com.
Use the electronics from the van.
The rear will hold up fine if it's the 8 1/4. They were pretty common in V6, and later V8 Dakotas.

Message: one more question. what about front springs and shocks? guess i'll see if the vans springs fit.

Message: The stock springs and shocks should be fine. When Mopar did the SHelby V8 edition on the '89's, all it did was swap the 318 into a V6 Sport chassis. No changes to the springs/shocks were required. The 360 and 318 are very close in weight, so I wouldn't worry about that. Some good gas-charged shocks would be fine.
