Subject: 1994 V-6 to V-8...Can it be done? IP: Logged
Message: I think that this forum is like the person with the 93 Dakota but wanting to ask some questions, just so I am clear.
- 1994 Dodge Dakota 4x4 w/ 3.9, 5 spd. It has 172k+ on it and I am planning for the future. I love my truck, wish it were a club cab long bed but hey, still love it. I plan on keeping it until I make a few million, hehe. Anyway, I want to upgrade it to be a better hauler. I would like to replace the V6 with the 318 (maybe the 4.7 if feasible but keeping questions to the 318), but need to know if I will need to move/install new motor mounts, will I need a new tranny, I know I'll need the computer, but need to know what else I may possibly need to make my decision more concrete. Otherwise, I'll simply choose to buy another 3.9 when the original fails. Or, are there tweaks I can do to get more out of the 3.9 to make it a better hauler, I doubt it, but gotta ask just because.
- I appreciate any advise, suggestions, comments I can get. I am a die hard Dodge man and really like the Dakotas. It disappointed me when Dodge took away the 8 foot bed but I still like the Dakota over the Rams (short of the Cummins model :P~ ). Please feel free to e-mail me at infamouswb@yahoo.com or msg me on the Y! messenger for quicker answering/conversation. Thanks again in advance.

Message: some of the more knowledgeable people here should be able to give you the details on swapping to a 318, but from what i know, it is a pretty easy swap. you could also go with a 360 for not much more trouble and expense. i think the mounts are the same for the 318, not sure about the 360 though. and you'll need a new pcm, tranny, and other small miscelaneous stuff, maybe stronger front coils for the v8 weight, but i'm not sure it weighs THAT much more than the 239. as far as the 4.7 is concerned, it would be alot more difficult because it is a different design from the previous engine lines. it can probably be done, but it would cost more and be a more troublesome swap. i would only go with another 6 if you absolutely had to. i've got a 6 and i wish i had got the 8 now, not that i'm unhappy with it but it certainly would help to have those two extra cylinders in some situatuions. for the money you would put into making the 239 perform like the 318 or 360 you could get the 318 for the same price and maybe save some. someone correct me or add-on if i am wrong or misinforming about anything. so that is my opinion. good luck with it.

Message: V6 to V8? I don't think anyone has ever asked that question before. I doubt that anyone has done it or even attempted it.

Message: I think the 360 would be a little much for me. Would help make it a great hauler but I rarely haul anything that really "tests" the engine. Usually once a year is about all. But, I'd like the V8 to make it a little easier. I am thinking of replacing the radiator with a heavier duty one to get a little more cooling. I've already put a K&N in it and that with the Duralube I put in it has gained me a few horses and about 2 mpg, overall. Simply looking for advice and cost comparisons here to see if it will be worth the investment or not. Thanks for the info though 03Kota.

Message: First you want to know if it can be done and now you want encouragement? How do you measure worth? If, like you say, you only use it a couple of times a year to pull heavy stuff, rent, beg, borrow or steal a different truck. It is absolutely not "worth" the investment.
Now, on the other hand, if you just want a v8 for awsome power and to impress yourself and your friends, that's an entirely different subject.

Message: Not looking for encouragement whatsoever. I want to "upgrade" the truck a little so I have a little more HP and pulling when I need it. That is all. Short of actually just buying a true 1/2 ton or so truck, wanting to see the cost comparisons. I realize it will be more money and a lot more work, just seeing what I am up against. If you don't like my interest or can't help me, don't bother replying and being a butthead Mr. ??????

You are feeding us a tiny bit of information at a time. You said you were looking for "advice and cost comparisons." I gave you advice and you didn't bother telling anyone what you wanted to compare it to.
First, the upgrade is not a "little" upgrade, it is a major one. Second, if you simply want a v8, but don't really need one, just say so. Third, my advice still stands. Fourth, this forum is loaded with v6-v8 swap questions and answers. Did you read them all first?

Message: ??????, ease up a little on the guy. if he wants to put in a v8, it's his business and his money. and i believe he's comparing between a 318 and 287, and like i told him the 318 is the cheaper investment and much easier swap. but Wyatt, come on, you know you want it to do a little impressing so go ahead and admit it ;-). BTW, ?????? is saying right by there being a lot of info on the other forums and older topic postings. just type in something like "v8 swap" in the search area at the top of the site and hit search. you'll probably learn more from reading older posts than you would by just one person giving advice. hope this helps, good luck with her.

Message: Ok since nobody really answered his orginal question with a striaght answer, it is simple to swap motors. you need the 318, computer and harness. the mounts are the same, trasmission will bolt up and all you need is to put the v-8 pcm in there with the v-8 harness for the 2 extra injectors...project finished. the power will be nice, the mileage will be similar and the fun will begin. enjoy!

Pin 17 #7 injecter
Pin 18 #8 injecter
And just pick up a ground near the comp like
from another injecter
You will have to pull the orange rubber out of
the computer plug and you will see the numbers
and get 2 pins to add from a old harnass in the
bone yard

Message: I too am about to swap. J&J, I have a harness, but you say to just add 2 wires & computer. Is that easier?
