1. Is it legal to swap from a 3.9 v6 to a 318 v8 for a 1993 dodge dakota? Is it legal for federal and illinois state law?
2. Has anyone done this or know where I can find a step by step manual for converting? I've looked online for such and found nothing.

i don;t know about ur laws over there but the 318 was an option in ur truck so why would it be illegal. I;m doing the same swap as you are switching my 93 3.9 2wd 5 speed to a fuel injected 5.2 5 speed. I;v been reseaching for a few months now and have found most my information from dakotausa.com by searching there old forums. hope that helps

Everything will bolt right up just use the flex
plate from the V6 and same trans.
Add #17 and #18 to the wire harnes plug on comp
17 #7 injector
18 #8 injector
and pick up a ground for the injector from one
of the exsisting injectors
You will need to pull the rubber out of comp plug
get the 2 pins from an old harnass and add them
run to injectors and plug in a V8 computer all
else the same
Very easy swap

However, you cannot use the same flexplate as the V6 with either 318 or 360 when using the Magnum fuel injection. The Crank sensor will only read 6 "windows" in the v6 flexplate, therefore, it will only see 6 cylinders. This will not work for the V8 applications, and you cannot modify a V6 plate by adding more "windows". You can use the same torque converter with the V8's, but if used with the 5.9, it must have weight added to it to properly balance, or a 5.9 Magnum converter must be used. Do not use the pre-Magnum 5.9 converter as the weight is different there as well, but can be adjusted if you have no other option. The V6 and 318 are both zero-balance, so they interchange without the weight issue.

I have a few questions about putting a 318 into my 91 dakota ext. cab that presently has a 3.9 in it. How big of a job is it to put a Magnum 318 in? My v6 has a throttle body on it and from the info that i gathered, a Magnum has multi-port injection. Will i have to do alot of rewiring? I believe a Magnum computer will have to be installed to go with the engine. Anyone have any info that could help me out? Thanks

91dak318-if you do like i said in your other post,you won,t have wiring issues at all,other wise you need pcm, wiring harness, fuse box for drivers side inner fender,crank sensor,flex plate or flywheel for 5.2,drill or cut hole in bellhousing for crank sensor etc.etc.etc.plus issues i may have forget or missed
this engine change is,nt as easy as putting a 5.2mag v8 in the place of a 3.9 mag v6 swap

Would adding the pins to #17 and#18
work on a 98 ram as well?? Doin a 3.9 to
5.9 swap and this is the part I can't figure
out..
