Subject: Computer ??? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 3.9 and the truck just stopped running. I checked it from front to back and decided it was the fuel pump. Took the old pump out and it was fine. No power getting to the pump. Checked relays, ect ect, My best guess was the computer went out. Towed to the dealer and was told the computer was bad, Cause....Stereo wasn't grounded to the battery but to the frame. and every time the amps hit hard it was drawing power from the computer. after time the computer just quit working. Cost to replace$650.00
Does this sound true? If so what do I need to do with the amps? I didn't just spend$1,200.00 for nothing did I?

Message: Small possibility !
Not sure about 97 , but older trucks had a
poor " splice " either right under the fusebox
underhood , or in the harness from there back to firewall .. Your amps may have sped up the
deterioration , but ??
If very high power amp = best to run a heavy
ground connection from it direct to battery , or at least to the motor which has a heavy ground
return to battery..

Message: did you have any probs w/ the amp? like lights dimming or blinking when it hit hard? what size amp, what size wire? did you check the ignition also before you changed the comp? trying to cover all bases. PCM's are covered under the emissions warranty(like 8yr/80,000 miles i believe)

Message: For some reason, I'm not buyin' that load of dealer crap for a minute. In every situation I have ever dealt with, especially jump-starting a vehicle (which involves heavy-duty amperage), you are supposed to ground to the frame (on the recipient, not the donor), not the battery. I'm thinking you got fleeced.
