Subject: Getting to the ignition lock cylinder... IP: Logged
Message: So, I got in my 94 Dakota tonight and turned the key, and the ignition cylinder felt all kinds of loose. It turned as far as it normally does, but the only response in the car as what normally happens when the key is in the "on" position, meaning the the cylinder (i think) is not turning far enough to actually start the engine.
I think the whole lock cylinder is screwed because it just feels really loose and you have to mess with it alot to get the key back to the off position.
Anyway, my question is, is there any way to get that bottom plastic cover off the steering column? Not the one down by the pedals, but the one right behind the wheel that has the ignition cylinder coming out of it? I looked in my Haynes and all it had was how to take the entire steering wheel off to pop out the whole cylinder. I wanted to see if I could just look at it before I went to all that trouble.
Thanks in advance!

Message: There should be a couple of torx screws holding it in place and a phillips screw (all three on the bottom). I had my '91 do the same thing, got the key cylinder at Autozone for under $20, different key but who cares for that price. Get a Haynes manual at Autozone as well, it has the step by step proces on how to do this. Be careful, you have an airbag and I didn't. Took 30 minutes or so, good luck.

Message: disconnect the battery before working on it, if you short something out you wont be replacing it or aas the above mentioned, your airbag, which will run about a LOT of money to replace.

Message: Oops, I just re-read your post, you do have a Haynes manual. Its a good starting point (I'm assuming your looking under Chapter 12, Page 12-13-15?). Once you get the cover off there should be three screws that hold the cylinder in place. Those require a special torx head with a hole in the middle, acutally, the ones that hold the housing on may require the same thing. If you don't have one most parts store carry a little kit. Ask the guy at the counter and he should know what your wanting.
