Subject: installing a catalytic converter IP: Logged
Message: Hey,
Just bought a new Cat for my 99 dakota sport, its the v6 magnum which is 3.9l.
its a direct fit cat and i was wondering about installing it myself instead of paying mechanic 90$. its apparent the bolts on both ends of pipe come off and pull the whole thing out from exhaust pipe. anybody do this before? any suggestions as to ease in doing it and saving myself $. im in PA and we do emissions here so i need the CAt. any help or info would be great. thanks

Message: Drew,
I live in Alabama. We've never had auto inspections, and almost any muffler shop will gladly take the cat off and put a pipe in for you. I had the cat taken off an old Firebird I used to have. I still have the cat on my Dak, though.
Yes, I know removing the cat is a federal law and not a state law, but it's not enforced here.
Not sure about other states.

Message: Depending on how many miles your dakota has on it. If your dakota has less than 80,000 miles on it Dodge will replace it for free, because Dodge has a 80,000 mile exhaust warranty. I had 79,500 miles on my 1997 dakota and I took it into the dealer and they replaced it for free.

Message: Thanks Josh for the reply. My 99 has 40,000 mi. thats it. So if i called a dodge dealer and told them i need to have my Cat replaced, they would do it for nothing?? I bought a new Cat at advanced auto parts for 142$ the direct fit type. and the mechanics i use said they would put it on and it would cost about 90$. I dont have any extended warranty on the truck and it is 5yrs old.
anything else to add to this?? it doesnt look that bad to do it myself either.

Message: Hello ATLANTA,
LMAO! You are right about Al. I've lived here all my life so I can make fun of it!
You know the vehicle laws are so backward here.
As long as you have only 1-tail light, you're legal.
You can drive any vehicle (or resemblence of) in any shape or form, and it's legal. But, you must get a tag for it (gov. has got to get their money).
If a car is prior to year 1974, you don't even need a title, just a bill of sale!
ONLY in BAMA!!

Message: I work warranty at a not so hot brand car lot.
80k miles is federal mandated exhaust warranty. It includes certain points of the exhaust, oxygen sensors, and a few other sensors i cant recall off my head that control emissions.

Message: I'm in the Atlanta area myself. It's stricter here than when I lived in North Carolina. I grew up in Indiana. It used to not be required to have a cat in indiana, not sure if that's the case or not. Almost everyone ran straight pipes. It's kind of odd here. when I moved to NC I had to take the written test to get my NC drivers license, when I moved to GA all I had to do was hava a valid license.

Message: Is this normal?
Mine: 97 3.9 stock 2.5" single axhaust, stock muffler & 155,000 miles on it and now working on my "3rd" CAT. First 2 were dealer replaced and 3rd one I bought. 1st one at 30k miles, 2nd at 65k miles and 3rd replaced at 95k miles. I've since added CAI and flowmaster 40 deltaflow 40 series 3 weeks ago. Hopefully these mods help it last longer.
Thoughts??
Thanks

Message: thats my question too. It shouldnt keep needing to be replaced. when the Cat goes isnt that meaning that something in engine is causing it to happen?
my other car is a 91 chevy lumina euro its got 126k and had to have the compressor and alternator replaced 2x. there has to be a reason why certain parts need to be replaced more than usual, something else is going on somewhere.

Message: alternators have alot to do with were you live =) In KIA's theres a service bulletin to replace alt, batt heatshield and belt because of high ambient temps on all of there vehicles So that could be an alt issue.
With your cat, Are you running rich? lots of carbon buildup in car? I cant possibly think of needed 3 cats in that short span there pretty hard to f up
