I can not find an owners manual anywhere for my truck, tried junk yards, dealers, no luck.
Every used car or truck I ever bought never has an owners manual in it.
It is a regular cab, has 6.5 foot bed, 5 speed manual tranny.
I need to know what tranny it has, the under hood list shows a A535 for the tranny, tag on tranny can't be read, gas gauge don't work, is it a 15 or 18 gal. tank?
My Haynes book is no help on these things.
The quick lube place put in 10-30 motor oil in tranny, seems strange it is not SAE 90 gear oil. Haynes book does not list the A535 manual 5 speed tranny.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Bill,

I too have a '91 Dakota with a 5-speed and yes it does take the 10W30 motor oil in it. Its also referred to as a NV2500 (as opposed to the NV3500 used in the newer trucks). I ran into a guy with a '91 as well and he had the Chrysler Certified Service Manual for the Dakota. It said to use 10W30 motor oil. I bought mine about 1.5 years ago and it would grind going into second on cold days so I checked the fluid, it was some kind of heavy gear lube like you used in the old manual transmissions, like in my '78 Ford truck. Drained it and added Castrol GTX 10W30 and it shifts great now. My truck has the 8' bed and the tank is 22 gallons, I'm not sure if the shortbed truck had the same size or not but it is stamped right on the bottom and sides of mine. The gas gauge doesn't work on mine too well (typical for this year truck), until the last 1/4 of a tank that is and the low fuel light works just fine. I reset the trip meter and fill up after 250-300 miles or when the light comes on.

Thanks Mha1102, I appreciate the info.
My tranny whines a little in all gears, not real loud, but it seems almost like the lube is too thin, guess i'm used to the old cars of the 60's with the SAE 90 lube, had a 1963 Ford standard for 17 years..
My gas gauge goes all over the place, needle stays down to the bottom on empty when I fill the tank, but when the gas gets down a little about 60 miles or so of driving, it starts jumping all over.
The low on gas indicator bulbs were removed before I got the truck, guess it must have drove the guy crazy.
I will look at the tank and see if there is anything marked as to the gallon capacity.
Thanks again!

Checkout www.ebaymotors.com. I've seen 91 owners manual on there before. I've bought a factory service manual and FI factory manual off ebay.
