I've been following this and other intake porting threads, and I can see both sides. My kegger's belly pan is leaking, so I have a real interest here. What do I want to do when I pull it?

There's two schools - one is N56629 (and me) and the other is the shadetree mechanic that's done it before. He and I have both challenged guys that have done it before to provide some reasoning and theory behind what they have done and have been unimpressed with the answers. The timing of the pulses must be maintained, even if the number of times air travels up and down the runner is changed, because you want it to hit the intake valve at the moment it opens. This aids in filling the cylinder better. However, this is only in a narrow RPM range; likely down low. So, when the runners are cut, this point will change... where will that point be? How can some guys cut different lengths off runners... what have you done? Do you know?

Why gasket match and create a step? Why not match it to the head so there's a seamless transfer? Does the step induce turbulence that is desired... or that is not desired? Do you guys doing it know?

Before I'll play doctor, I want at least some reasoning behind the madness. I want to know what action my choices make. Maybe that's why it costs so much to have a shop do it ;)

Larry from Jand J Auto has ported the intake manifolds on at least three of the 3.9 v6 trucks in addition to his own and he has some of these dynoed; any where from 8 to 12 hp. Any time you can gasket match the intake manifold to the head or heads you will increase flow and increase power.

I have gasket matched the intake manifold on 2 v6 dakotas and one on a 92 5.2 4x4 that had a leaky plenum gasket in all cases these trucks have increased air flow, better throttle response and increased power.
