Message: HELP!
I posted in a thread and did not get a responce, maybe this will help.
I have a 98' Dakota and about 6 months ago, I began to have the exact same engine problems as the originator of this thread.
Be advised that the following happened for about 2 months and than it went away. Now it started up again.
1. When starting truck, all is OK.
2. Engine RPM drops while on drive at a stop, usualy after warm up.
3. Begin to hear a loud "Shhhhhhh!" and smell fumes.
4. Begin to hear popping noise (like popcorn) in air intake when attempting to drive away.
5. Truck begins to act like a stubborn mule.
6. Cars behind me begin to honk, pass me up, and give me the finger.
I have taken the car to three diferent mechanics, in order to get a more detailed cause for the problem.
First mech told me that it needs a tune up. (Can't be, I tune it up on a regular basis.)
Second mech told me the timing is off. (Cant' be, timming does not fix itself.)
Third mech scratching his head told me it sounds like a sensor but did not know which of three. (This guy was more confused than I, so he must be right.)
It has been hooked up to a diagnostics machine and it was also confused. The mech said that he will need to replase each sensor, one at a time to find the bad one.
He totaled the estimate at about $600. Turns out that 1 sensor might be bad, but I will be buying three.
F@%$ NO!
Can some one please tell if they have the same problem.
Thanks.

Message: Took me two days of seeing this post repeatedly, but I think I prolly have it... I bet it's your bellypan/plenum gasket.

Message: Pinomex,
How many miles do you have on your Dakota? If you have more than 60,000 miles it could your O2 sensor, another possibility is the fuel sync in the distributor, sometimes refered as the distributor pickup. When was the last time you had a good tune: good tune refered to as changing the dist. cap, rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs, it recommended to change the O2 sensor when changing the rest.
Do you get a check engine light? It might be worth it to have someone chek your dak with an engine scanner. Report back when you get it fixed or asj for additional help, others like Larry, Daddio, Xmr, Whitedakota2 and other have helped answer questions in the past. Good Luck.

Message: An O2 sensor shouldn't suddenly cause a hissing noise or popping in the intake I don't think...though it would cause a loss of power and gas mileage. Plus it'd make things run a bit rough maybe.
I talked to my friend about my plenum gasket idea and he agreed that could be it... the easiest way to check it is to pull off your airhat, open your throttle blades (with the engine off mind you), take a flashlight and look down into the intake manifold. If it's clean, it's good...if there's a lot of oil/gunk in it, it needs replaced.
Another thing...what's the MAP sensor do exactly? Would a bad one be able to cause that perhaps? I know it has to do with pressure and stuff and the cause of this sounds somewhat vacuum related.

Message: A MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor basically tells the computer how much load is on the engine, on certain vehicles it even acts as a barometric pressure sensor. This could cause it but not really likly. check the belly pan gasket, as well as intake leaks etc. Also get a scan tool and read where the fuel sync is at, it should be around 0-1

Message: that sounds like what my truck is doing. It did it while goin 85 down the interstate the other night. When it does this, it'll cut off completely and it takes a few tries to get it to crank back up. The "check engine" and "check gages" lights will come on and then go off when it cranks. Its really pissing me off!!!

Message: pinomex, have you found the prob yet? what have you done to resolve it? it could be a combination of things. possibly the IAC needs to be cleaned. could also be an issue with timing, ie- distributor pick up or worn dist bushing.

Message: the real problem is cheapness, not by the truck mnfg. but by the owner. He has gone to several "mechanics" that have no idea what the problem is, that I'll bet a lot, do not work for a dealer and never have. The best thing to do in this case when your shady tree mechanic does not know is to go to a dealer, a good one by rep, not the bad one in your area and you already know who that one is, most do after a while, and spend the money to get it fixed right. You already have 6 opinions on here from 6 guys that don't agree and two of them seem to be ready to start an arguement about it. One guy even talked to a mysterious "friend".
In my area there are 7 DC dealers that are reasonably close, and only 2 get any work from me, you get the idea.
