Message: My friend has his setup with dual-LOOK antennas on his 4x4 Ranger...he's got em on the front sides of the bed. The only catch is, only one is a functional antenna. The other is just an identical pole.

Message: Yes if you like the look of duels use one and the other just mount don't wire. 5-6 feet duels distort side-ways not front to back. That is why I run duels on my Big Rig. mounted 8 feet apart it distorts the signal front to back, so I get the max. range up and down the hiway. not to roads that run next to the hiway :-)

Message: 5'-6' does not go to the sides, it's front/back too.
Running a antenna not hooked up will still harm your omni pattern because it will act as a reflector or director. You need to not only keep it disconnected, but also make sure it is NOT grounded (through any ground wire or through the mount itself). If it isn't grounded, then it should be pretty much invisable to the driven element.
I always thought it would be cool to drive a long-haul truck and run a homebrewed dipole down the trailer and try to work 80 and 40 meters.

Message: wiring it direct to the battery is the best bet. it will cut the interferance down and enable you to have it on without the key on, i did this with both my cb and my headace rack lights, 150w long range kc's, on a 2wd dakota, i also got my cb mounted on my roof in front of my rear view mirror.., with dual 5 foot white whips, on 1 hooked up thoe i need a cophase wire, i believe in that 6 foot rule. my friends call me a hick dondt know y eh!

Message: If you wire direct to the battery then fuse both pos & neg lines. That 6' rule should be 9'.
