hey,
I have a 93 dakota 4x4 cc v6 auto, i have the stock exhaust system with the addition of a flowmaster muffler. the truck has 129000 miles on it and i get $hit mileage 10 cty, 17 hwy, i was wondering if you think i should cut the cat out (i dont do emissions testing) and do you think i will lose low end from the decrease in backpressure? thanks for the input.

Removing that cat is not only a federal crime (punishable by $2,500 fine, whether or not you have emissions inspection), it will do absolutely nothing to improve gas mileage. But your HC emissions will go up 1000%.

I have a 92 Dak 4x4 club cab V-6 with 4-speed auto and cap, and I get 16 mpg city, 20 mpg highway. This is all stock. You can simply do a full tuneup and keep it to 65 mph, you'll get much better mileage. These trucks push so much air, it doesn't take much over the limit to kill gas mileage. How you use your right foot will be your biggest improvement.

NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT REMOVING, i SAID IT IS "GUTTED" MEANING NOTHING INSIDE PHYSICALLY IT IS THERE JUST NO INSIDES, CANT TELL A THING, AND IF U DID HAVE EMISIIONS IN WHICH I DO, RESET THE PC TO CLEAR ALL CODES AND RUN IT IN WITH IT BEINGCOLD AND IT PASSES EASY AS THAT, I JUST PASSED MY EMISSIONS LAST WEEK. BUT MOST OF ALL WE ALL DONT WANNA DRIVE 65 WHEN MOST SPEED LIMITS ARE 70 WAY WAY TOO SLOW MAN... MUST BE AN OLD FART

That's still illegal todd. Where are most speed limits 70? It's 55 where I live, and 75 everywhere else I've been. I've never seen 70 before. I know by yelling your trying to get your point across, but you really look stupid in doing so. You may want to reconsider. And yes, somebody did say something about removing the cat. The original poster in fact, so chill out little boy. Slow your roll. And finally, at least learn to punctuate if your going to be comminicating online. Commas do not replace periods. What the hell is a "t-body intake chip"? lol

Throttle body, cold air intake, and perfomance chip.

Fix your gas mileage with them, but throw in a 180 theromstat, and move your IAT sensor.

Gut the cat, just don't have a pipe running straight back, make sure it has a bend or 2 (at least 4x4 97+ daks have to bend the pipes for dual exhaust around the spare tire. The low end loss is hardly noticeable, if it's there at all.

"Gut the cat" - still illegal. It's illegal to defeat any emissions control, not just to remove it. There are plenty of good high-flow cats out there that are legal and work great.

jeremy, slow 4x4 and joe sumed it up, thanks for SPELLING it out for the less fortunate slow 4x4!! and joe is correct as i was before, most of the east coast is 70MPH, if it were 75 id love it to death. But personally ive never seen 75MPH speed limit sign as well I havent seen much of a 65MPH speed limit sign lately either. try not to put your foot in your mouth next time man.

Bob Lincoln is a tool, if they dont do emissions test go for it. I know cops driving around with true duals. I had a friend of a friend that owns a shop cut mine, and I noticed alot. Sounds better and better millage. some people are just set in there ways, the only way to get caught is to turn yourself in or if Officer Bob Lincoln turns you in. I bet there are tons of people here who have done it, also. its only illeal if you pay to have it done. I had a f150 and I removed the headers and towed it to the shop, the put on true duals. everything was legal so to say.

Actually, nearly all of New England is 65 mph, with none of it higher. Some of it is 55 and 60. Much of Rte 95 is 65 mph in other states. 75 mph speed limits are common in the southwest, particularly Utah.

It is illegal for anyone to defeat or remove emissions controls, dickhead, it doesn't matter if you pay someone. That shop owner can also lose his business. None of what you did was legal.

http://www.epa.gov/oar/caa/caa203.txt

”Sec. 203. (a) The following acts and the causing thereof are
prohibited-

..3)(A) for any person to remove or render inoperative any
device or element of design installed on or in a motor
vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regula-
tions under this title prior to its sale and delivery to the
ultimate purchaser, or for any person knowingly to remove or
render inoperative any such device or element of design
after such sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser;"

Removing a cat will not give better mileage, it will only increase HC emissions by 10x. As for cops doing it, well, we just had a cop resign here for molesting a little girl; two cops demoted for beating each other up over dating each other's former girlfriends; another cop who let his son in a club to drink underage and stood by while the manager was beaten up by the kid's friends for trying to eject the kid. So what a cop will do has no bearing on the law.

hi there todd. I know what you meant. I was laughing at your expense because you wrote two paragraphs and didn't one single period. I live on the east coast. Last I checked TN wasn't on the coast. Who's slow now? It's 55 MOST places over here. MOST everything west of the mississippi is 75. Maybe you should branch out a little. If you got out more you might be less likely to pick random, senseless fights on the internet. At least you stopped yelling, congrats for that. You still don't have any valid reason to attack bob though. Speaking of putting ones foot in ones mouth. You said "NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT REMOVING" when the original post clearly states he is thinking about removing his cat. Don't be dumb man, let this one rest.

Bob never said not to do it, he just wanted you to know that is against the law. I don't know anyone who ever got fined, but I am sure its happened. Bob just wanted to be sure you knew incase you do it and then get fined.

I had mine gutted a few years ago, didn't like it, so I replaced the cat with a hi flow unit.

The decision is your. He just wanted to be sure you had the facts.
