Subject: Interior Coolant leak IP: Logged
Message: Used my heater for the first time the other day and found coolant on my passanger side floor mat. The coolant seems to be/no is coming from the floor duct on the passanger side. I've checked a couple of posts that mention leaks from a hose at the firewall but none referring to the floor duct when the heater is used. Is this from the same hose or area? Haven't seen any coolant spots in my driveway.

Message: check the clamps on the heater hoses going into the heater core. if they are not loose it is probably the heater core itself leaking.

Message: DEFFINATLY the heater core. more than likely, the core is rusted through... make sure to do a damn good coolant flush after installing the new one...

Message: yup, definately either the hoses going to the heater core on the inside of the truck are old and cracked apart, or the heater core needs replaced. Either way, a coolant flush would be a very good idea.

Message: Thanks guys! I've got it parked now till I have a better chance of checking it out when i'm off, friday or saturday. If it is the heater core anyone know a good place/site to get a replacement and is it a somewhat easy diy project
drain/flush/remove/replace/refill?

Message: I had the same problem. It was the solder on the heater core end cap. It looks like the solder was eaten away by electrolysis. It was all white and crystaly where the end cap or tank was soldered on the core. Also there was a small wire strap around the centre of the core that is tacked on by a small weld. Mine was broken on one end allowing it to etch away on the brass core itself. It had worn halfway into the core. If the solder didn't fail, the wire probably would have worn through in a few years anyways. On my new core I gambled and cut the wire off. Also i plan on changing my anti-freeze every year. With a aluminum radiator, an iron engine and a brass heater core i guess electrolysis is a problem for solder joints on the Dakota.
P.S. If you want a reasonable amount of heat, get the original dealer core.
