anyone know how to repair stripped threads?Replaced hub bearing on my 99 2wd dak when i went to re install caliper threads stripped out of one of the mounting holes.A mechanic told me to use a helicoil but i never installed one before is this the best thing to do or can i use a tap to re thread it?

I had the exact same thing happen on my 97 Dakota. After researching my options on fixing it I choose to go with a oversized caliper pin. Many on this site have said not too use them but I figured it was worth a shot. It worked perfect! I picked mine up at Pepboy's.(Motormite P/N 13894) they were pricey at 16.99 each but got the job done and got me going again.

Don't you have to re-tap? If so, it would be a better option than installing a Heli-coil.

When I backed one caliper pin out of the hub on my 93 Dakota, the threads were filled with metal. Needless to say, I couldn't tighten the pin back down.

I drilled it and tapped it and install a helicoil and used the same caliper pin. I was a little afraid of how well a helicoil would hold up, but so far it has been just fine.

When you are drilling metal, make sure you do it at high speed and it is good to put a few drops of oil on your drill bit. This reduces the chance of catching.

FYI the "coil" in the helicoil is made out of 303 grade stainless steel and in most cases is stronger then the parent metal you had to drill out and oversize (diameter wise) tap to install the coil.
drilling ot "high speed" as 93 dak recommends WILL burn up the drill. If at all posible remove the caliper mounting bracket and use a drill press running at or as close as posible to 500 RPM without going any faster. This will do the job and not destroy the drill so it can be used another day.

Heli-coil the stripped hole! The self tapping oversized caliper bolts are supposed to be a "one time use only" item to get you out of a pinch. They cut threads on thier way in, but leave all sorts of metal fragments in the threads which can strip out the threads when you back the bolt out. Plus, if you get the Helicoil kit, your set for the next time one of the holes gets stripped out.

NAPA should be able too hook you up the the helicoil if not try a Bumper to Bumper autoparts. I just used the oversized pin on mine because I got in a situation where the truck had to be put back together. I'm sure when I go do put brakes on it again I'll be having these problems all over again.
