Subject: Code 51 IP: Logged
Message: I have a '91 Dakota w/ 133,000 miles on it, I reset my PCM last week to clear all codes and had code 12, code 62, and code 51 come back. Now, the code 51 in the Haynes manual states the truck's O2 sensor is stuck in a lean position. This code has been recorded since I purchased the truck 18 months ago and I have put about 20,000 miles on it since the purchase. The truck seems to run fine in 100 degree weather or 10 degree weather, gas milage is 15 city and 20 highway, not too bad, and passed the emissions test last year with flying colors. What is up with the code 51? I think the gas milage could be a little better, but not alot different than what I have seen others post. Anyone have any thoughts if something else could be causing this code to pop up besides the O2 sensor? Thanks in advance for your input.

Message: O2 sensor signal indicates lean air/fuel ratio during engine operation. The computer ran the mixture to the rich limit of programming, but the O2 sensor still indicated a lean condition. L or R indicate left or right side O2 sensor. Fuel pressure problems can lean the mixture and set this fault
from this link

Possible - fuel filter ( if there is one )
also - weak fuel pump
and of course a " lazy " O2 sensor

Message: The 91 only has one oxygen sensor. Was the oxygen sensor replaced? Your gas milage is in line with my 200000 miler Dakota. ~17 city with the new exhaust and 20+ on the highway. I can't wait for the next long trip. I want to see just how well the new exhaust and cat improves gas milage.

Message: Well, to my knowledge the O2 sensor has never been replaced (I've only had the truck 18 months so who knows), I know the maintenance mauals say replace at 60,000 miles, but as I mentioned above the truck seems to run pretty good. I guess if the gas milage gets worse or the truck starts running bad I'll replace the O2 sensor. I've read somwhere you can actually uplug the O2 sensor on these TBI injected motors and see if they run better, I would have to plug it back in or replace it however, thats a no no here in the St. Louis area when it comes inspection time.

Message: unpluging the o2 sensor is just a short term test to see if it runs better if it does replace the o2 sansor.
