Message: Just do what everyone else is doing, it seems the mod of the month is to remove the clutch fan. This is assuming you have the electric backup or install an aftermarket electric one. Look for the thread no fan = free horsepower

Message: You can do exactly what i dont want to do but might have to anyways. Go to autozone and rent the proper tools to do it. I think it's like $40 or so. I've tried putting my foot on the belt so there was enough tension to keep the pulley from moving while trying to loosen the nut but I still managed to spin it.

Message: try grabbing the pulley from the side with vise- grip pliers. then put your wrench on the clutch fan nut and give it a good whack with a hammer. it should come right off.

Message: Not sure why you think the fan is defective. It's doing what it is designed to do. It runs for a few minutes on a cold engine and then lets lose and just coasts. If truck gets to hot, it reingages till temp drops. If your old one wasn't working this way, then there was something wrong with it for a long time. Try reading up on it and your answer is there. Will be exactly as I just said

Message: Save yourself alot of time & trouble by getting-renting the fan clutch wrench. I did this weekend. Time spent, on & off in less than 30minutes. Be sure to have a good hammer to beat the wrench off & on to tighten.

Message: So as long as you have the electric fan (which mine does) you can take off the fan clutch w/o overheating the engine?

Message: From what I take...yes. If you're worried about it still switch to a 180 T-stat and carry your fan with you just in case. Drive around like that for a while, if no problems then you can leave it at home. If a problem occurs at least you have your fan there. Wouldn't be hard to throw it back on.
