Ok, my dad has a 98 Dakota Sport 3.9L V6. He was having problems with it getting hot, but it never overheated. It got hot at idle and at higher speeds. We were told to change the tstat and radiator. So we put in a new radiator, put in a new tstat, and replaced the metal tube coming out of the waterpump that connects to the heater hose cause it looked like someone before us tried to use some sort of sealant on it for some reason right where is connects to the water pump. NOW... we fillled up the cooling syatem with new coolant, and the darn thing overheats every time. We cant even go around the block. when it gets hot the radiator hose going to the tstat gets very hot, so I'm guessing the tstat is definitly opening up. What else could it be?!?!? Do we need a new water pump? Please help!

When the water pump goes bad, usually it'll start dripping from the weep hole on the lower side. Sounds like the fan clutch is bad. Good place to start. Starting it cold, does it overheat in a couple minutes, or does it take several (like 10) minutes to get hot? Does it remain hot at highway speeds?

it takes several minutes to get hot, but once it gets to about 210, it overheats pretty quickly after that. Yes it overheats at highway speeds. The motor takes awhile to warm up, but it gradually gets to 210 (and this happens just sitting at idle or driving, but driving it makes it happen quicker) and then as soon as it hits 210, it overheats within minutes. And when we've drivin it even using the heater hasnt helped it from overheating. But sitting at idle the past few times, running the heater kept it between 210 and 260. And ideas? And is that radiator hose running to the tstat supposed to be very hard and hot when the truck gets warm? I feels inflated. Please help.

i have always made it a habit to chnage the t/stat when changing the waterpump. the upper hose will get hard as the engine gets to temp.
did you change the hoses? possibly a hose collasping?

Just because a thermostat is new does not mean it it good. I've stumbled into that promblem before.

Did you purge the system after you filled the new radiator. Air in the system could cause it to overheat as well. Is the therostat in the correct way. just my 2 cents

I would check to see if the thermostat is in the right way. While you have it out drop it in a pan of hot water and see if it opens.

Thank you all so very much, I checked all, and it was air in the system. It is running beautifully now!!!! Couldnt be better, knock on wood! I cant believe it was just air, but, live and learn! Thank you all! Couldnt have done it without you.

it aint no way the fan clutch iffen it over heats at hiway speeds. the new thermostat might be installed back side out (backwards) there is a up and down side to them, or most likely the water pump has worn away the vanes in it due to too much disolved rust acting like super fine sand paper and sanding away the vanes, it does happen, and see it a lot. could be too that a badly slippen autotranny is puttin out too much heat to the tranny cooler installed in the radiator and it makes it look like it is over heating when the tranny is actually on it's way out.

Not sure if this is related but i have a 99' v6 that had a similar problem. With a cold engine,as
soon as i would turn the key the temp gauge would show about 130 or so and would idle rough for a few minutes, then the temp would shoot up to 220. The problem ended up being the coolant temp sensor.

My 2002 dodge dakota 3.9L 190,000 miles
overheats only at freeway speeds.
It runs normal temperature around town
but within a few minutes on the freeway
it runs very hot.
New water pump, t-sat, hoses, intake
manifold gaskets.

Thanks in advance

Rich, check your breaks to see if they're hot after a freeway drive. It could be a caliper sticking and causing the engine to work harder then it needs to.
