Subject: Mods that don't decrease mpg?

I am wondering what modifications will not decrease my gas mileage. I have a flowmaster muffler on right now and a cold air intake on the way. However, I am not sure where to go next. I was thinking about getting a new TB and 180 Thermostat, but both of these decrease gas mileage. I am going to college soon, so I want as much gas mileage as possible. I am considering roller rockers or maybe an underdrive pulley (not sure if the mpg is worth slowing down the accessories, though). Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

The Throttlebody should not decrease gas mileage. I installed a v8 throttlebody on my v6 dak without the mileage going down. The 180 degree thermostat may cause your mileage to down aliitle bit, but power should increase.

You could go with a jet chip and the 180 degrees thermostat, according to Larry from J and J Auto most of the trucks he has had into his shop see a 1 to 3 mpg increase in mileage. If you were to do the cranksensor position mod, this will advance timing 3 to 4 degrees, it will give you more power and a 1 to 2 mpg, the down side you may have to go up from 97 to 89 octane gas.

Trying a good set of low resistance spark plug wires and the autolite 3923 spark plugs gapped 5 to 10 thousands over factory gap this will give a slight increase in power and may improve mileage also. Generally anything you do to increase power can lead to a gas mileage increase, if you drive with a light foot.

I didn't realize that throttle bodies don't decrease gas mileage. I was under the impression that they did. Maybe that's what I'll work on next. Thanks for the input.

I just installed a V8 TB into my 92 3.9 Dak based on advice on this board.

The improvement in throttle response was immediate. It is now pulling much better on my local hills. Don't have to gear down as often either. Low gear acceleration is much improved.

A definite must do for the 3.9L.

Working on my second tank of gas but gas mileage has improved quite a bit. Mixed city/highway driving was getting me around 14 to 15L/100km. Straight highway saw 12.5L/100km.

My last tank would have put mixed driving at 12.5L/100km. That's significant. Will be able to verify after this next tank and the computer readjusting completely.

Going to put in some 1.7Rockers for more power and see how that helps with mileage. My guess is that it will stay the same or improve. The better breathing should allow me to use less throttle - more power per RPM. We shall see.

I am thrilled with the TB performance and strongly suggest you look at it for the money. I have a K&N replacement filter, 180 thermostat, free flowing exhaust, upgraded plugs and wires, otherwise box stock 5 speed 4X4.

Jerry

If your so worried about saving money on gas then don't get the mods. That's a real good way to save money.

Um..... You can take the rubber/plastic cover off the front of your radiator frame after removing the "snorkel" from your airbox on a 3.7L v6 and get a k&n or foam filter element like amsoil's and you can get increases of 2 to 3 mpg with a light foot. Lay in on it and you can decrease your gas mileage too. Just be sure that you are doing mostly highway mileage, and not following cars on dirt roads.

I am probably going to make one myself, and not spend all the money on a k&n FIPK. On the site http://www.geocities.com/atvnut808/intake.html it gives clear instructions on how to build one yourself. This is the site of someone on this board called atvnut (I think). The only thing I am worried about is that he didn't secure the intake at all. Can anyone think of a way I can do this, or will it not bounce around in there?

Just picked up a '00 3.9 4x4 from my sis this week and found this site. Great info!
Kudos to Rob (atvnut808) and his inginuity. Also thanks to mysteriusblur for passing it on. Will be trying this shortly. As for securing it, a couple of well placed black tie straps (zippy ties) should suffice and not require drilling etc.
Just a thought. Mean while back to sifting through all these great ideas!
