Subject: stalling problem IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
i have a manual 94 dakota sport with about 140,000k on it. It's recently started stalling at very slow rpm's, like when i put the clutch in to stop at a stop sign. it's ok if i keep giving it gas, but otherwise will sputter a bit, then stall. it also has a very rough time when i first start it with rocking back and forth if i don't let it run for a while before i drive it. (it's kinda like shifting and letting out on the clutch too fast.) i've just had the air filter replaced. being a girl, i don't know a whole lot about cars, but i know a little. anyone know what might be the problem? and who can explain it in layman's terms? lol, that would be very helpful! thanks:)

Message: it could be that your IAC motor is dirty, its located on the back of your throttle valve assembly held on with two torque screws, if you take it off, hit it with some intake cleaner and a light brushing should maybe take care of the problem. just dont twist it or push it in or out that can damage it. (IAC = Idle Air Control)

Message: I had the same last spring with my 94 2wd automatic. It was the EGR valve.
The truck would stall when idling around a parking lot or putting it in park.
The EGR valve is behind the engine on the passenger side and is a little larger than a hockey puck.
EGR (exhaust gas return valve) If it sticks open or closed it messes with the idle
My 2 cents ($$$canadian)

Message: my '95 has done this to me on several occassions. this remedies the problem every time: run a bottle of stp fuel injector cleaner in with a fresh tank of gas. it worked for me more than once. also, be careful of the gas you run through your engine, low quality fuel(i.e. Swifty, Kocolene, etc) can gum those ports quite quickly.

Message: he is right could be the egr valve too, there is a simple way to test if it is bad though, take an extra long piece of vacuum line, run it from a good vacuum source to the egr valve when the engine is idling, if it kills the motor the egr valve is good.
