Subject: 92' 42RH Tranny Questions!!! IP: Logged
Message: Howdy again folks. 92' Dak Sport, 42RH (A500) Tranny, 130K miles, 3.9L V6 with Homebrew Cold Air Intake, Flowmaster 40 2.5" IN/OUT, V8 stock TB and AP3923's. I'm having the usual odd shifting problems which seem to be getting worse.
I just had my transmission filter changed Friday and it seemed to make the problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd when starting out cold go away, but now my problem is shifting out of 1st under WOT whether the tranny is warmed up or not. If I come off the line at WOT, it winds up to 5K RPM before I chicken out, then when I let off the gas, it shifts on into 2nd. I've read in numerous places that this could be due to the Governor Pressure Solenoid and the Speed output sensor. I would have gotten a full tranny flush Friday, but the lube guy talked me into chickening out on it due to a few small metal flakes in the pan. Could anyone who is familiar with the 92' 42RH (A500) trannys help me figure out where the Governor Pressure Solenoid and Speed output sensor is located in the tranny of my truck? Would it require pulling the valve body to change these pieces? Does it sound like these parts could be my problem? Are there really any conditions in which a full flush would invoke a death sentence for my tranny? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. Please don't mention AMSOIL, because it's outta the question until I get my baby fixed. hehe

Message: Ive got a 94 3.9L auto with the same problems you are describing. Although I dont always have to be WOT sometimes just regular or light acceleration it will wrap all the way up to 5k without shifting. Then sometimes when i let off it will disengage and act like its in neutral. Sometimes it will reengage, sometimes i have to pull it into second, sometimes i just give it gas and it will snap back in around 3k.
I took mine aamco asked them to check it out. They said I needed to rebuild my transmission for ~$1200. I left figuring I would just drive it till it dies and just buy a new one for $1600. While looking around at APS the other day on their site they have this.
"Bucking and heaving before shifting to 2nd Gear
Jeep and Dodge Vehicles equipped with 42-47RE series transmissions may experience bucking during wide open throttle (WOT) acceleration. The bucking occurs at approximately 5300 RPM. This condition may be caused by reaching the high RPM fuel shut off rev limit before the transmission can shift into the next higher gear and is most likely to occur with high electrical loads (high beams on, heated back light, heated seats, radio, HVAC blower on MAX etc.). During high current demands, the generator may emit electrical noise that can affect the transmission governor pressure sensor output. If this occurs, the transmission may not shift properly to the next higher gear under (WOT) acceleration conditions and therefore reach the fuel shut off rev limiter. This may be seen most often between the 2-3 shifts but can also be experienced between the 1-2 shifts.
If the bucking condition is experienced at approximately 5300 RPM before making the appropriate up-shifts, switch off all electrical loads and repeat the procedure. Repeat the procedure with the electrical loads on and off a second time. If the bucking occurs with the electrical loads on and does not occur with the loads off, perform the Repair Procedure.
Part required to fix 56041403AA Sensor
APS Custom Valve Bodies with Sensors use the latest revision sensors and do not have this issue"
also
"None of our Torque Converters cause problems with shifting, check engine lights, or having to lift off the accelerator to shift (1-2 shift or 2-3 shift). This is a sign of an inferior, poorly built Torque Converter. We only build the highest quality converters."
So im wondering if its the torque converter that is shot...
not sure let me know your thoughts.

Message: You don't have a pressure govenor solenoid on a 92. That came on the later trucks. (96 I believe was the first year.)
You should adjust your bands. The outside band is the easiest. That affects your 2-3 shift. The low-reverse band adjustment is inside the transmission, and you get to it by removing the pan.
You also should adjust the detent cable that goes from your throttle body to your transmission. It is easy on the Gen 2 trucks. There is a cable on teh passenger side of the engine that goes off of the back of the throttle body. There is a black square piece of plastic where it connects to the back of the throttle body, and there is a button on it. You press the button and then you can slide the cable to adjust it. Pull it away from the throttle body to make the truck shift later, and push it toward the throttle body to make the truck shift sooner.
Also, you might want to consider changing or at least checking the throttle position sensor, as that has an affect on the way the tranny shifts too.

Message: I see the black square piece you are talking about but not the button. Is it gonna be the same on a 94 as it would on a 93?

Message: Actually my buddy had a simialr problem with his 00 dak. Every once and awhile the tranny would start slipping and having a hard time shifting. So I took my fairly new throttle body that I had on my truck before i swapped it to a V8 one and the thing runs brand new!!! thats with 180,000kms. Id definatly check that out and swap it with someone u know to test it out. Good Luck!

Message: Well, that answers my questions as far as the parts locations. Any more input on whether to go ahead and get a full flush? Would a shift kit fix the problem if it's too dangerous to flush?

start asking questions I know how to tune a trans
to do exactly what you want it to do.
Some may require a shift kit to perform to what
you expect it to do.
Before you lay down expectations of what this
should be please ask me I can tune these trans
to be anything you would want them to be
In other words please ask me before you do any

Message: Hey Larry thanks for the help. For the time being I just want to get rid of the problems mine is having shifting from 2-3 and having to lift off to get it to shift(see above). If I have to replace anything I want it to be more performance oriented weather its a shift kit, valve body, torque converter, etc. This is what i have already done to my truck:
~76000mi, trans fluid is still red but dont think if its ever been changed

Message: Thanks for popping into the thread Larry! All of your info and advice that I've found and used previously from you has worked well, so I definitely trust ya. First off, I want to get past the tranny flush issue. What are the conditions in which a tranny flush would ruin my transmission? The only reason I am even worried about it is I'm not sure if it's EVER been flushed by the previous owner, and I want to know my baby's got the best condition possible of fluid in her. Next, how do I get rid of my 2-3 shift problem when first starting to drive my truck after a cold start? The shifting out of 1st in WOT is the least of my worries right now, but will come later. Thanks in advance!
By the way... If a complete flush DOES somehow end up killing my transmission, would it be something that a Transgo shift kit would fix?

Message: Larry,
Could you please explain the "The low end build presure spring"?
My truck shifts incredibly hard from first gear to second gear. It seems to do it only when I am just barely above idle and the truck shifts from 1 to 2 at about 17-25 miles per hour.

Message: In response to Chris' question, I 'd like to chime in and say that my 94 Sport 4x4 3.9 with 42RH, purchased new, had 1200 miles when the tranny started to slip/not shift/etc and all it needed was an entirely new trans. After I got it back, reverse didn't work (that's a cute story for another time.) So, back to dealer for new t-converter. Since then, though no real problems at 90k other than the occassional high revving out of first - but only when it's below freezing. Go figure.

Message: The spring is right next to the presure adjusting
screw and from valve body to seat should be .900
some are adjustible some are not and require just
a little presure on the tab to bend so you have
the .900
sounds more like you need to back off you TV cable
back of TB bracket older ones had a button you
press and move cable newer remove cover and move
clip. back higher shift point foward lower
the 42RH does not have elec gov presure controll
A power flush can be bad news pick up dirt and
lodge it in the valve body and cause probs
fluid and filter change
ATF+4 or Amsoil no cheap fluids or dextron
check the return spring on the TV lever down by
the trans and the operation of the lever

Message:
I have a 2000 DAKOTA 4SP RWD V6 3.9L 42RH/RE (A500). I'm having the same problems with the heaving and bucking going into 2nd gear. I sounds like the engine is revving when driving. It will go away, but it still feel hesitant when shifting. I've been told I needed a transmission pressure sensor, torque converter and a dozen other things to fix this. It comes and goes and it doesn't matter if it is hot or cold, it still has the problem. I've replaced the transmission filer and fluid and it seemed to solve the problem, but then a few days later it started back up. I've had it tested and no codes, or anything is going off. I've also replaced the water pump, hoses, thermostat, and belt tensioner. I'm really lost to what is really causing this problem and any help or information would be helpful. Also, is there a way of testing the bands to see if they are too loose and what are the specs on tightening them.
Jeremie
