I have read some of the posts on this before , but can't seem to find the cause for me.

My '95 CC 4x4 auto w/ 3.9L idles rough. around 800 rpm in park. it idles rough enough to shanke the entire truck. This has always been a little rough for as long as I have owned it (bought it in '98) but not quite this rough. I recently changed the plugs and wires. After doing so it idled smoother (same rpm ranges but with less shaking), but after about 125 miles or so it started idling rough again. It idles around 600 rpm in drive, but still shakes as bad. fuel filter was replaced a couple of months ago.

pretty much stock, autolight plugs and wires. Cat was replaced back in feb. It also has a new belt.

anyone have any ideas of what to look at? I'm going to remove the plastic cap on the end of the air intake in the grill and while i'm at it check for any leaks or blockages. I am also going to change the pcv.

Have you ever done a full tune-up? That includes the PCV valve, distributor cap, wires, rotor, plugs, air and gas filters and clean the throttle body.

When I got my truck I found the center electrode on the dist cap on the outside was horribly corroded. All other terminals fine. Made a big difference changing that.

Also, did you change timing chain? There's a TSB on these, they wear and have slack and noise.

I've done all of that but clean the throttle body, replace PCV value or replace the timing chain. I have the PCV value, I picked it up a few days ago but not installed yet. I will do that tomorrow. The gas filter and air filter were changed within the last couple of months.

I removed the restrictor plate on the air intake (mine was plastic) to allow more air flow in. The intake system was not clogged. My PVC value was not bad, but I replaced it anyway. The rough idling has calmed down alot - it's not as noticable has it has been in the past. I rechecked my plugs, wires, cap, etc as stated above. The only other things I have left to do are clean the TB and check the timing chain.

I've read some posts about cleaning the TB, seems some people just sprayed cleaner while on the vehicle while other say the ideal way is to remove it? What harm if any can come from just spraying it while on the vehicle? I'm not going to have time until next weekend to remove it from the truck to clean thourghly.

hehe i could always leave the hood up while jeane comes through ;)

If you spray cleaner into the throttle body while it is running it will do nothing to clean the throtle body but may cause your plenum gasket to start leaking. so why risk it. Check out speedtweaks.ca for instructions on how to clean your throttle body.

As Bob Lincoln stated change the distributor cap and rotor. Another possibility is a bad EGR vacume diaphram or other vacume lines. Wit the truck idling take a pair of needle nose pliers and squeeze each line individually, if the idle roughness clears up trace the vacume line to its offending source and correct the problem. The idle air controller IAC unit on the back side of the throttle body could be carboned up causing it to stick, this could affect your idle. Another possibility could be the plenum gasket gasket on the bottom side intake manifold leaking. If this gasket is leaking it can cause pinging and increased oil consumption. Something else to consider, that at times can be overlooked, a leaky master cylinder vacume booster, your breaks might be be weak if this was bad. I hope these suggestions help, report back when you find and get the problem solved, Thanks.
