Message: After reading several posts on the the intake manifold mod it is not clear to me if cutting the runners down is wise or not. I am looking to maitain good low end torque. I have a V8 TB,K&N FIPK going to put in crower 1.7's I have on the shelf. Some say cut 1.5" others 2". This is all at the speculation of low end torque loss. I also read something about filling the manifold. Is it necessary? Some say yes some say no. Is this about volumetric efficency? How is it best done? Since I will be taking the intake manifold off to get install a plenium plate and end the intake leak I thought this would be thew time to do this.

The runners must flow enough air at peak rpm to support the horsepower your engine is capable of, but not be so big that they have extremely low velocity at low rpm. Basically you have the runners to the induction pressure waves. When you change the length of the runner, you change the rpm range that it was designed for.
Considering the fact that DC most likely makes some compromises, like tuning for mid-range, it is entirely possible that you would want longer runners for more low-end torque.

Message: I have modded the intake manifold on 3 seperate Daks, 2 92 one v8, one v6 and a 97 v6. All of these daks have shown increases in horsepower and low end. I did not remove the divider on the 92s to keep the EGR operational to meet emissions, I did remove the divider on the 97 v6. The trucks all run much better, better low end and somewhat improved mileage. I also used a drill with a wood bit extender and round wire brush to some out the runners, this worked well also.

Message: You didn't say what the modification was. Shortening the intake runners to improve the bottom end is something new to me.

Are you saying that you polished intake runners?

Message: I have not taken the manifold off yet. When you guys are talking about a devider is that the 2-3 inch metal bridge between the two holes where the throttle body mounts?
Also I have an electric die grinder what end tips work well on aluminum. What size works best to radius the injector ports? Stones will just load up and then your done. Is there a saw type tip that can cut through the runner casting rather then grind on it?
I sure wish Larry could have got this step by step on the "How To" section!
