Subject: ping noise or what? IP: Logged
Message: Hey dodge dakota gurus.. im having a slight problem with my dak. Its a 93 3.9 xcab with an auto( i wanted a stick but i couldnt complain for 500 bucks ). When i start it up in the morning i always let it sit for around 3 to 5 minutes ( it does have 125000 miles on ) and when i take off i dont hear any engine noise thats unusual minus a belt that needs to be replaced. Anyways, when the engine warms up some and i get on the gas just a little.. i hear a noise from about 1600 to 2800 rpms. I typically let the auto shift at 2400 but i take it up occasionally. It sounds like metal tapping on other metal and i gave my neighbor a ride who is a seasoned mechanic and he said that it was ping. The truck needs a tune up and im going to replace the plugs very soon along with that belt and the cap and plugs but i was wondering if it could be the valves or the lifters or anything else that is making this noise. He also said that the timing may have to be retarded a degree or two.. how would this affect my performance. I recently had the exhaust replaced with a high flo cat with a 3 inch pipe to the muffler and stock tail pipe. I didnt have the problem with the noise before this and yes yes yes i know, i lost WAY too much low end and i am having that pipe put back to stock size soon as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!
THANKS
JOSH

Message: i would guess it to be ping as well. might as well try and fix that before you start digging into the valvetrain. do the tuneup, put in some good fresh plugs (most would recommend autolite 3923), make sure theyre gapped correctly. check your injectors as well, may need cleaning to give better and more consistant fuel delivery. make sure youve got a clean air filter in as well. and of course, make sure youre running good gas and maybe go up an octane level (or two)
i would point the blame at ping, since it only happens as you say from 1600 to 2800 rpm, and once its warmed up. if it were valves or lifters going bad you would probably hear it much more often. listen to your neighbor and see what he thinks you should do. good luck, hope you get it fixed

Message: thanks i really appriciate it. Ive been hearing the noise for a while now and when i run 89 instead of 87, it doesnt seem to happen much. Today however, i was merging onto I40 and i was behind a grandpa going 45 at the end of the ramp so i had to go WOT to even get into the next lane for a few seconds. After it shifted into OD it was making that sound really bad. It has a brandispaking new airfilter as of last week and until i can manage to rig up a homebrew one, it will have to be a purolater.lol. it works and im on a limited budget being in highschool and all. i am pretty sure that it has a 180 degree thermo in it because the needle only goes a little off the line right next to the C mark when ive been driving for hours so atleast that part is right. i will change the plugs and get some fuel injector cleaner and see what that does... one more thing though.. when it sits for a while and gets cold... when it starts.. the whole truck shakes and the idle is VERY sporadic for about 3 minutes.. any guesses. thanks again!

Message: Ever change the timing chain? That might be the "ping" noise.
Idle when cold may be stuck AIS. Mine was rusty and had a fair amount of gummy gasoline residue in the passages of the throttle body. I had a hot start/stall problem that is now cured.

Message: Be willing to bet that a truck with that many miles, has some problem with the EGR system. Don't know if you can manually operate the valve or not, but if you can, at idle open the valve with your fingers and it should bring the engine to its knees. If it continues to idle with the valve open, some of the passages are probably clogged with carbon and need to be cleaned out.

Message: sorry im defintely new at this sort of thing but what exactly is an AIS? and EGR? no.. the timing chain hasnt ever been replaced or even adjusted.lol. i'll prolly end up doing that and see what happens but i need money first.lol. if you could explain AIS and EGR, i would really appriciate it.thanks

Message: It sounds like the problem has no relation to the timming chain. If you don't know what an EGR valve is you need to take the truck to a good mechanic or buy a Haynes manual and read it befor you mess with your engine.
