Subject: V6 Fuel Pump Bad???

Message:
On a cold motor i hooked up the pressure guage to the fuel rail and got a 4 pound reading. It took 3 cycles of turning the key on and off within about 2 seconds of each other (without actually starting the motor) to get a 45lb reading. After i achieved that 45lb reading i let it sit to see if it held at 45lbs. Within 15 seconds, that 45lb reading dropped to 10lbs and even less as i let it sit longer. I find that if i turn the key about 3 times the truck will start ok. However if i try to start it without doing that the motor will just crank over and the pressure will slowly start to build and the engine will finally start when the pressure reaches 30lbs or so. After the engine is running there are no problems at all, runs very well, nice and smooth with plenty of power. So my question is...is my fuel pump getting tired? I thought maybe an injector was leaking but the rapid decrease in pressure along with the fact that when it does start there is no smoke at all coming from the tail pipe leads me to believe that it's a tired pump. Does this sound right to you guys and am i justified going out and spending $130.00 on a rebuilt pump from the Dodge parts man based on what is happening? Thanks for any input. Tom

Hey I just had the same problem and I replaced the fuel pump for $205.00 with a new one from NAPA but I have a buddy that has had three rebuilt ones in 30000 miles from Mopar and I think that is a bad sign. Good luck

Ok. Maybe the new is the way to go but a new mopar is around $350.00 or thereabouts. I'll do some pricing on "new" aftermarket. Thanks for the info. Tom

If your FI system is returnless style you probably need to replace filter in the top of the fuel pump module. Your pump may be OK, it's just trying to pump through a corked up filter.

That makes sense too. I just wonder with 70,000 miles on the truck and this is the original pump/filter, maybe i should just replace the whole thing? Thanks for pointing that out. Tom

I just replaced the filter/regulator on my 94 v6 4x4 with 178k miles. $75.00 dealer part.It solved the problem of intermitent goughing/ hard starting etc. The check valve was bad for sure, the filter was probably cloged and the regulator might not have been giving me enough pressure....

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my 96 has the pump and filter as one unit located inside the gas tank. Tom

I changed the fuel pump recently in my '96 3.9 and actually found it a lot easier to remove the bed of the truck rather than dropping the tank. Got the idea from this site and it really was quite easy with a little help from the neighbors.

I have read that too here Carl. But with an aluminum topper and a bedliner to take off i guess im leaning towards tackling it from underneath. As far as i can tell all i need to remove are 2 nuts from the 2 straps. The filler neck and fuel lines could be a bear however. I dont know, i've never done it. Thanks. Tom

Yeah the filter/regulator is on top of the pump. Dodge put the tank in before the bed, there are two bolts on the skid plate that are a bitch to get off. after getting mine off I welded nuts on top of the bracket next time I can get them ALL from underneath. If you don't have the skid plate it should be no problem.
The filter /regulator is just a pressure fit into a rubber grommet on top of the pump, but you have to cut the line from the actual pump and use a new clamp that comes with the filter unit to reconnect the line...really a no brainer

Thanks Dog. If the skid plate would be on the bottom of the tank, then i dont have one. Thanks for the heads up on the filter/regulator. Tom
