Subject: 3.9 mag, 2 different stories...

Message:
ok, I have just read recent posts about people driving the 3.9 in genIII daks and swearing to their grave that any 4 banger could push more... And I have a heavy optioned 4x4 club cab 99 AUTO 3.9 with 31x10.5 inch tires... pretty much everything to add weight, but i wanted a cc and 4x4... But the thing is that my dak with the 3.9 and all that weight has no delays and takes off whenever I want without shifting all over the place or anything... ( i do have a transgo shift kit whether that does anythnig).. but I noticed that these people complaining about the no balls 3.9 have 3.55 rear end. I have the 3.96 rear end. Can the different rear end really do that much difference? I mean i can spin the tires all I want and it pulls pretty darn good, no BS. I mean we have a 03 4.7 liter durango to compare to a little ( no im not saying its close at all to the 4.7, im just saying im not deprived of the v-8 power).. yes i'm rambling but im trying to get this answer. so my question again is can different gears make that much difference? (why have 3.55 anyways???) thanks fellas for your time

I asked my dealer about switching out the 3.55s...

The certified mechanic said that it would actually have the opposite effect. That the higher ratios would make my truck SLOWER to accelerate.

Seriously thinking it's time to go back to a chevy:(

kaybee: the mechanic is and idiot. the 3.92 or 4.10 will defiantly improve acceleration.

I just posted my first time asking about waking up this 3.9, but speaking from my Mustang building experience only, steeper gears will definitly throw the azz into the back of the seat and give the impression of better performance at the line for sure, no question what so ever. I would not let this mechanic fix my car at all if he does not know this. What you should also know though is that the steeper gears make highway driving more of a challange and will affect your top end rpm's and speed, that's the trade off for more go in the city. You should also change your speedometer cable gear for an accurate reading.

kaybee, i think that by "higher" that mechanic meant "taller" as in 3.21 gears, not higher numerically as in 4.10. 4.10 gears will definitely help get any heavy vehicle rolling.

Well, I don't know if they heard me backwards, or what. If you go on dodge.com to spec out a new Dakota, it says right on there that higher axle ratios improve acceleration and climbing. These are the areas I want improvement. So, what kind of difference could I expect with the 3.92 over my 3.55?

Thanks, you guys.

What about the warranty? Will I be OK as long as the dealer installs the new gears, or will my warranty be shot?

The "lower" gear ratio as in lower geared such as 4:10's and up or any time you change your gearing to a lower ratio will make it much easier to tow and get up and go with, but some draw backs as stated are ---

- loss in fuel mileage "from 3:55's to 3:92's shouldn't be enough to really notice, maybe 1 mpg at most"
- can't run as fast in gears and also top end loss
- due to fact engine has to turn more rpm's for the same highway or usuall driving speed, engine life is reduced and same for trans
- have to run at very high engine speeds "or higher than usuall" durring highway driving

Benefits are ---

- can tow more
- quicker take offs "or launches"
- may not have to downshift on hills, where before you may have needed to
- can haul more
- more engine torque and hp is put to the rear wheels
- less drivetrain power loss "synthetic lubes alone has shone an increase of 8hp in rwhp, so just imagine what the gear swap will due to your rwhp"

I personally have a 3:21 rear end and if honestly ever given the chance to change out to 3:92's, I would more than happily do it as long as I could also get a good lsd/locker unit with it, but as of now no money to do so, so it will just have to wait... As far as warranty goes, you'll just have to ask your dealer in detail, because there are a lot of little details or minorcaluties that will void warranties...
