Subject: belt question IP: Logged
Message: I picked up a new belt for my 95 v6 with a/c at autozone. Got home and tried to put it on, but noticed 2 things. One the belt was too skinny and not long enough. I took it back and was told the belt was the corrent length but not width. They gave me the "correct one" - part # 975K7, the incorrect one was 975K6. The belt is still too short, i was not able to put it on, i had help and we verified the belt did not slip off any of the pullys. both belts autozone gave me was a length (i guess) of 2475. The length of the belt (mopar belt) currently on the vehicle is a 2476.
Can someone tell me what the meaning and difference of 2475 and 2476 is? the guy at auto zone said it means the 2476 is 1 millimeter longer than 2475. but 1mm is not enough of a difference to make the autozone belt fit vs not fit - there's not enough slack to put it over the tensioner pully rim. the old belt fits fine.
I guess i'm calling to dealership today.
any help is much appreciated.

Message: I've always thought it was an inch measurement, never heard of the milimeter thing before, that way you can take the last 2 numbers in the part number and easily buy anyone else's brand as long as it's the same length

Message: Word of advice, stay away from Auto-Zone. There prices are typicaly more expensive, and to be honest, there idiots. Point proven with them giving you the wrong belt. Deffinatly go with Napa if you can. I ran into the same problem both with Auto-Zone AND Murray's auto Parts (i think there a big michigan thing) and both gave me incorrect belts.

Message: I've been using autozone for a long time, granted not with the current dakota I have but other vehicles (fords). Autozone and Advance are actually cheaper around here, carquest, NAPA and pep boys are the more expensive places, almost near dealer prices (about 30% cheaper) for those things I've looked at.
I am with mark, I thought it was an inch measurement too. I will pick up the belt at napa. It will be a couple of days, I have no garage and IVAN is rolling in.

Message: I did stop by NAPA and pick up a belt. It did work. The belt is 98" for my truck. I did talk to a guy at pep boys and the there are 2 different belts for the '95 dakota. One for factory air and one for dealer air - so it depends on who installed the a/c ??? I've never heard of that. The lengths are not the same. Maybe they used different size pullyes or something. there is a difference of 1/2 inch. 97 1/2" or 98"
