Subject: Does an IAC go bad or just get dirty? IP: Logged
Message: That's pretty much my question. 2001 v6. I cleaned the carbon off the tip and sprayed cleaner through the place the IAC goes into, and when the truck is running, the plunger still doesn't go all the way back as soon as you let off the throttle- it takes about 2 seconds for the plunger to come out. So in other words, the RPM stays where it is for about 2 seconds when I let off the gas, before slowly settling down to idle.

Message: Yes they can go bad. They will slow down or not move at all.
The IAC will open to add air to keep the idle speed up and close to slow down the idle speed. You said "doesn't go all the way back" at one point and then "the plunger to come out" at another. Which one is it?
Do you have a stock TB or a larger one?

Message: yeah they can go bad. when you cleaned it, were you careful with the plunger? did you turn it or push it in? that will damage it.

Whitedak, I meant to say "doesn't go all the way back to original position when at idle", at the original point I am trying to describe, the plunger is fully extended. So basically both terms I used were meant to describe the same problem. I would have just said "closed" but I wasn't sure if that would confuse people who aren't falimier with how it works.
What goes bad on these things, is there a servo in there that's controlled by the computer?

Message: I've been replacing IAC's in my 93 every 3 yrs. They say its a heat problem.

Message: Well it's not the IAC causing my problem. I replaced it yesterday. The throttle is still slow to react to my foot, and doesn't drop off the RPM for a second or two after I take my foot off the gas. Anybody have any other ideas?

Message: Reset the computer and see if that changes anything...or have you tried that already?

Message: have you checked your TPS voltage? with the key on and truck NOT running, check the middle terminal+ to ground with a digital vom. should read between .35vdc - .75vdc @ idle. if that's ok move the throttle to wide open and return to idle. the voltage should change steadily up as you open the throttle to (i think) about 4 vdc then return to original reading @ idle. if it doesn't return to the first idle voltage reading, that's your problem.

Message: Those are probably typical TPS numbers, but the FSM says the minimum at throttle-closed is 0.2 volts, WOT is 4.0 volts.
I've heard a lot about raising the TPS reading at idle for better performance, and I understand it fools the SBEC into feeding more gas than it should to give quicker offline performance, but it seems to me that the higher you raise it, the more resolution you lose. You reduce the bandwidth of the throttle reading.
