Message: Ive never been to this forum before, but I'm looking at a 97 Dakota sport v6 auto with 40k miles and im looking to keep the truck for a while. (Im talking like 10 more years)
1.are there any major issues with the motors, transmissions, chassis, or anything I should know before I purchase it. Ive gotten from this site that ball joints could be a common problem. anything else like that?
2. The guy pulled a trailer from california to ohio when he moved. Would this hurt the truck? or whats the manual say about towing long distances?
3. I was talking to my uncle who has a 85 s10 v6 that he bought new and has 277k miles on it and its original motor/tranny. is this common with dakotas?
4. its a california truck with 40k miles auto extended cab, 2 wheel drive. he wants 7k for it...is this resonable?

Message: Greetings Joe! you first might want to check different threads on various problems throughout this board, the most common problem for most not all? is indeed ball joints but i've also read about paint peeling off the front bumper, water forming under the passenger side front rug area, lose truck box, premature front brake rotor warp and not enough heat by the drivers side left foot area those are only a few things that i could think of right now, i have a 2000 quad cab and so far no really big problems. i think 7k is not a bad price for it but then it all depends on the overall condition of the truck, i would check the exhaust system and the ball joints for shure and maybe take it to a garage and get a used vehicle inspection on it first. anyhoo if you do decide to buy the truck i wish you well with your purchase, and welcome to this web site.

Message: You can always check the kelly blue book value (www.kbb.com). You can also get the VIN number and do a carfax (www.carfax.com) check to see if it's been in any accidents.
I have a 95 club cab v6 4x4 with ~ 143k miles. There are several post I've seen with people that have 97's. They can offer up the issues they have had. I can tell you what problems i've had and i bought it with 39k miles in 98. It's the original motor and transmission. The problems i've had are what i would consider replaceable items - rotors, brakes, water pump, radiator, gas guage float, A/C , batteries. Over all it's been very reliable.

Message: I would go for it very low miles and with good
maintanance they run for ever.
I have customer trucks with 200 250,000 miles
still running great.
The 1997 had 2 isues to watch for
1 ball joints easily replaced with moog
2 some trucks in that year did have a trans
presure sensor and valve problem cost to replace
with there upgraded parts around $200
Those are the only isues they had on the 97 model
There are also many things you can do to the V6
to increase performance and gas mileage.
They are great little trucks you will love it
