Subject: Firm shifting auto trans (99 dak) stock IP: Logged
Message: Hello, Ive heard that when the auto trans in Dakotas start to get worn they tend to slip and so forth.. but my tranny (1999 dakota 3.9 4x4 CC with 80,000 miles) shifts very firm, if not to firm.. Every shift is very quick and acts just like my dads auto in his auto 69 chevy camaro with a 350 in it.. So I havent heard of thsi happeneing when a trany gets a lot of miles on it. So what could be going wrong or did the previous owner put a shift kit on it? I like how it shifts , i am not al into the soft ride thsi and soft ride that.. ( after all it is a truck). Its not bad until i get on the gas, thne it just feels liek it drops into gear hard and very jerky! just like blam vroooom blam ( without the noice of course jus tfeels like it). Sorry for the blabbering just want to give you guys the details as best as possible.. And oh yeah, do you guys know what tranny is in this truck ( the manu. number) thanks

Message: It sounds like your DAK has a shift kit installed :-) can you chirp in second?
I still have a transgo shiftkit in my closet for a 42/44/46RE, and RH transmissions! I love ths feeling of an auto with a shiftkit!
I had a 81 trnas am (POS) with a shiftkit (400 with a 400 turbo trans amd 4:11 POSI). it lurched HARD when I got on it, and would really squak the tires hard in the 1-2 shift ;-) but now I'm MOPAR forever!
If only I could get my 45RFE to shift hard(er) then it does!

Message: It's possible that the kickdown is adjusted all the way for the highest upshift and firmest shift, but with the mileage, I'd tend to think it'd had some valve body tinkering, most likely in the form of a shift kit.

Message: If you have a 3.9L auto, you have the 42RE transmission. (the 5.2L gets the 44RE and the 5.9L gets the 46RE. And the 4.7L gets either the 45 RFE or the 5-45 RFE)
I have a TransGo shiftkit I never instaled (TFOD-HD2. 500 & 518 series 2R) I bought for my 98 3.9L. I since have traded the truck, and the kit wont work for my 45RFE....
So what I'm Saying is, Drop me an email with an offer :-)I paid $99 for it new and I only opened the box to read the instructions....

Message: Your Dakota may have had a shift kit put in it. But it could also be that the bands are getting slightly out of adjustment; if this is the case it causes unecessary stress on the transmission. I would have the oil & filter changed and have the bands adjusted; one adjustment is on the outside of the transmission and one is on the inside. If the front band releases to early the engine will rev as if it is slipping or if its to late they bind and cause unecessary stress and wear. The latter could be your symptom. These are very fine adjustments so find out exactly how to make them before trying it yourself. I did mine today and wow shifts like a new one at 155,000 miles on a 97. The book suggests that the bands be adjusted every time the oil & filter is changed every 20,000 mi. normal use and 12,000 mi. commercial use. Good Luck.
