Subject: v6-v8 use the same cat? IP: Logged
Message: does anyone know if the late model 5.2 dakota uses the same catlytic convertor as the 3.9 ? I just want to find out if the stock cat is really causing a bottleneck in the exhaust for the 3.9.

Message: What year ?
How old is cat ?
-=- may well be same ' size ' !
But-=- that does NOT mean that yours is not
restricting the exhaust !!
If it has about 100,000 mile on it and still
original = Change it for an aftermarket new one
They are LESS restrictive ...

Message: ...it's a 2001 3.9 with 85k miles on it, but I'm not sure that helps with what I was asking.
If the same part number is used on a 5.2 then I can't really see how the cat would be restricting a wee 3.9.
For a 2001 dakota, does anyone know if the same converter is used for the 3.9 as the 5.2?

Message: Did you forget that a 3.9 is a 5.2 with two
cylinders " cut-off " ?
Listen to exhaust , feel with your hand !
As above - any doubt at all - get it replaced
Let that ' little ' 3.9 show you what it can
really do...........

there were no 5.2's in daks after '99. so, probably not.

Message: So if that cat is specific to the v6, then I am to assume that the stock cat is probably restrictive to that motor. Off it goes! I've got two more cats upstream of it anyway. Thanks for the info

Message: There's a bracket on my stock cat that attaches inboard to a rubber mount. If I put a pipe in it's place, I will be eliminating that bracket. Is this structural, meaning will my exhaust shake too much an cause future problems?
