My 97 Dak with 3.9 has multiport injection. I'm curious to know what folks are doing for general maintenence on the injectors. I have close to 80,000 miles and never touched them pretty much except for some occasional additives and high octane gas. Can they be cleaned? Can spray pattern be checked? What should I look for when inspecting them? DO they just get replaced after a certain amount of time? Anyone know some good prices for them? Thanks

I replaced my stock injectors which are not very efficient with a
set of bosch ones from fiveomotorsports.com, you could settle
for just taking yours off the fuel rail and cleaning them, make
sure to relieve pressure at the test port first

The FMS bosch injectors will give you better mid
and top end performance, smother idle and an
overall smother running motor due to there
closer tolerances and on most trucks better gas
mileage

Bruce at fivo is a great gut to deal with around
$200 a set of 6

Or just a can of STP injector cleaner once a year
taking them out and cleaning them does you no good
it does not clean the internal parts

STP is the strogest cleaner out there

When I first got my 01, it idled real ragged and had no pep off Idle. It had around 60k when I got it so I change the fuel filter and plugs which helped but it still idled pretty ragged. Watching the firing lines on the ign scope showed about 15-20 kv required to fire the NEW plugs at idle. Way to high. A fuel injection service brought the kv down to around 8-10k much better idle. The stock injectors appear to require a good cleaning around 60-70 thousand miles. I use a injector cleaning solvent made by BorgWarner but it requires special equipment to install it not really for DIY'ers. I know alot of people cough at spending $100-$200 for injector cleaning but it is really almost a required service for most vehicles on the road today. I have a set of #21 Bosch on order, should be here in a day or two. Anxious to see how they work out.

taking them out and cleaning them will clean the external parts
though, lets see you clean those by leaving them connected

i'd cough too @ 200 bucks for cleaning. i'd rather call five-o-motorsports and buy a new set of design III for less than that.

Actually, the 5.0 injectors are just as suseptable to 60k clogging as the originals. What you are paying for from 5.0 is a more closely matched set of injectors that spray a finer cone pattern. Perhaps a little explanation of injector clogging is in order. The primary problem late model injectors face is deposit build up in the pintle area. The way this deposit forms is when you shut your hot vehicle off, a small droplet of fuel is left on the tip of the injector. The heat of the engine causes this drop to evaporate but the solid components of the fuel remain on the tip. Many cycles of start/heat/stop (around 60-80k) cause this deposit to accumulate and grow to the point that it disrupts the fine cone pattern of a new injector.

As I said a can of injector cleaner once a year
and they have no probs making 150 200,000 miles

recomended for stock or replacement injectors it
will clean the internals and is cheap insurance
against failure

Larry is good to know that STP injector cleaner is one of the best around. I have been using it for many years.

My question or concern is that I use it on every Amsoil oil change, approximately 10K. The STP that I am using is the one that reads on the label to be used every 3k or oil change.

Is it ok the way I am doing it?
