Subject: 02 sensor vs clogged cat IP: Logged
Message: '96 3.9 Auto. New 02 sensor about a year ago. Fresh bosch platinum plugs. When starting out in the morning - everything is fine. After it warms up - hesitates on accelleration from a dead stop. Also seems to miss a little while cruising. Could of sworn I smelled raw fuel yesterday when I started from the stop sign. Any way to test te sensor or determine what could be causing the problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

Message: I'm not sure exactly how you test you sensor, but it can be done by reading the voltage with a multimeter... the voltage SHOULD constantly flip-flop between like .1 and .9 volts. If it doesn't, it's no good.

Message: Oh yeah, and it's highly unlikely that it's a clogged cat or it'd be doing it even when the engine is first warming up... the O2 wouldn't do it when you first start it because the truck hasn't gone into closed loop yet (which is when I believe it starts taking O2 readings).

Message: What gap did you set the plugs at ?
0.045 seems to be the optimum !
Also , did you ' index ' them ?
opening up toward intake manifold
between 10 and 2 at least !
It definitely helps !!

Message: since he did not mention changing plugs ABSOLUTELY NONE OF WHAT "?" SAID APPLIES. it sounds as if a sensor somewhere has gone out of spec just a bit but not enough to throw codes. best bet is to put a scan tool on it and see what is really going on...FREE from Autozone.

Read the post again. And BTW, he DID check codes.
Check EGR - it can stick open and cause problems with no code 32. Happened to my dad recently. Code 32 means that there was no change in mixture when vacuum was applied. If an EGR is stuck open and you accelerate, the mixture changes and vacuum has been applied, so no code trip.

How about the MAP sensor? Just a thought, but maybe in open loop, the MAP sensor inputs could be off a bit, but it runs okay. Then, when in closed loop, the O2 sensor inputs coupled with erroneous MAP sensor inputs is causing the problem.

Message: MAP sensor could also be off without tripping a code - code 13 is for pneumatic leak, and code 14 only indicates voltage above 4.96V or below 0.5V. So its curve could be off. But I've found that bad MAP sensors usually cause a lot of trouble in cold operation as well as hot, and don't cause missing when cruising.

Message: First of all - Bosch platinum 2 plugs are gapped at the factory and there is no adjustment.
It turned out that the problem was the wiring from the speed sensor on the tranny. The tranny had been changed 18 mos ago and the idiot never re-secured the wires. It was rubbing on the front drive shaft and grounding out. Taped it up and secured the wires and no more problems. I never would have suspected the speed sensor - glad it was obvious.
