Subject: did the TPS mod, still hesitates IP: Logged
Message: 2001 3.9 5spd. My TPS sensor read .7 volts but I drilled the inserts out and tweaked it to about 7.5 volts anyway because there's so much delay when you step on the gas that I was willing to try anything. Well that didnt change anything. I've done a full tune-up and the truck has that hesitation and idles kind of rough. It has had the dealer TSB flash for spark knock when it was almost new. Any other things I should be looking into?

Message: UGH! your truck had the "death flash" thats probably why it falls on it's face when you mash it. GB2000 (Josh) just did a good write-up on how to do the crank sensor mod. that should give you some of your timing advance back. how bad was the sparck knock before the TSB? if it was pretty bad, you should be careful advancing the timing. as you could damage the engine with too much detonation/preigniton. is the engine using any oil?? A lot of times, the intake belly (plenum) pan gasket leaks. the engine may loose a small amount of oil, and have spark knock (from excessive carbon buildup in the combustion chambers)
you can check out this site, for some info on how to test for a bad gasket.

I hope I helped.

Message: well it's a manual so you could make it knock alot easier than you could if it were an automatic. My father put the first 80k on it so I don't know how bad the knock was, other than him saying that it went away when he used premium fuel, but after he brought it to the stealer he was able to use regular. I've only put a few hundred miles on it since I've owned it so I don't know about oil consumption, but I've read the article on how to check the belly pan gasket but haven't done the test yet. It looks dry when I look down the throttle bores.
This problem does feel like it's sensor related, it's tricky to let the clutch out because you have to give it gas like a second early just to get the revs up over idle. Is there anything else that could be causing a delay?

Message: Even if I don't "mash" it, there's still a noticable delay between when I touch the gas pedal and when the tach moves. It takes about one full second before the engine reacts to any changes I make via. the gas pedal. Then when I release the pedal, the same delay occurs before the RPMs drop, and when they do, they drop very very slowly. This is why I was so convinced it was a bad TPS sensor, but that is reading .7 to .75 volts like it should.

Message: randy, i had the same prob on my '00 QC w/ 3.9 5 spd. i cranked the TPS to .85vdc and it has helped a lot. try it. if you don't like it or it doesn't help set it back to .75. some of these trucks react differently to the same mod.

Message: daddio, I actually had that same idea when I messed with the TPS, and I turned it counter-clockwise as hard as I could when I tightened the screws, but the highest voltage I could achieve was what I've got. I'd love to try to get more out of it. Did you use larger washers that go over the raised gray plastic piece, or did you use smaller ones that kind of fit at the edge of the gray plastic, but were large enough to hold the screw? I'm not sure how else to describe it without taking a picture. Thanks for your advice, I will try to turn it some more when I get home today.

Message: just took those steel bushings in the tps out and used some #10 washers. @ .85 i could prolly still get to about 1.5vdc if i wanted. but i think over .95 will throw a code.

Message: I found the best way to set the tps to a higher voltage is to simply take some of the rubber backed washers that come on roofing screws... That way you can tighten it down without having to ever worry about the tps slipping or mashing in the plastic housing on the tps...
With a little extra filling "using a chainsaw file" I have managed to be able to set the tps as high as 1. something volts if ever wished to do so, but since you can't go any higher than .98 I have found that my truck idles the best at around .9 volts... I had it set at .93 volts to show the best fuel mileage and throttle response, but it never would idle constantly at this setting "searched +/- 25 - 50 rpms all of the time", so I set it to .9 volts even...
Just remember to unhook battery after setting, so you can get it set as high as possible without effecting the idle...

Message: Hey one thing occured to me- I'm using the autolite 3923's that everyone here is so crazy about, and I gapped them to .035 according to Larry I think. But most people seem to run .045 gap with them, and say they run into problems when they run a closer gap. Even though I have the stock ignition, could it be my gap thats making the truck feel like such a turd?

Message: you only need to open that gap if you are using plat tip plugs. personnaly, i am using the BOSCH reg plat's 1 range colder than stock( # 3229 i think) gapped @ .045. i experimented with the gap. tried from .035 to .050 and .045 worked best. my truck really likes them.

Message: I was just wondering because I believe the stock gap for the stock plugs is around .045". Since I'm using plugs that don't cross reference to the vehicle I didn't know if suggested the .035" gap is just someone's opinion on here or if it's been determined the best for my application. Eventually I'll open them up when I get the msd coil but that will be after i do everything else that I have planned.
