Subject: steering control IP: Logged
Message: i have a 99 c/c v6 with 40k miles that is becoming
harder to control with respect to the steering.
have 2556515 tires that was factory. no problems
when the truck was new. there is no play in the
steering wheel, and the problem has something to
do with the pitch in the road. on flat road
everything seems fine. if i hit a bump, no matter
how slight, the truck wants to veer to the side
the bump was on. also, left side of highway truck
wants to go to the extreme left with me having to
pull hard right on the steering wheel. same thing
happens on the right side of the highway only i
have to pull left. there is severe pitching
somewhere. does anyone have experience with this?
brought it in for a wheel alignment and was told
everything was tight. i even jacked up the front
end, grasped the wheels top and bottom and side to
side with no play. nothing appears out of the
ordinary. any replies would be greatly appreciated
. thank you!

Message: I had a problem like that with my 94 Dakota took it in to get it lined up and found out the rack bolts were worn. 2 bolts I replaced them and they put in a cam bushing kit its fine now. Also get a second opinion on it, the first place I took it to lined it up with out checking any thing.

Message: My 98 4x4 Club Cab, now has sloppy steering, "excessive Freeplay", at tleast it seems more than it was new (now 47,000Km). Ive got steering shaft movement going into the Steering box (measured 1/4 - 1/2 inch at the steering wheel) and no movement coming out at the bottom (Pitman arm etc). There is an adustment that can be made on the Steering Box/Gear, Ive not yet ventured into making it, not sure how difficult/tricky it is. Is this what youve got? if you have someone move the steering wheel, you can crawl under & observe the input & output to the Steering box.

Message: sav, the first thing you should do is take your dak to an allighnment shop that knows what the hell they are doing. And while it is on the rack ask if you can take a look a your suspension. If they say no dont let them do the work. Also ask them if they can measure the bump steer. Just incase youdont know what that is, in laten term its the movement of your tires from full droop to full compresion, since you dont plan on taking you spring out to do that, tell them to go up slow until the tires just start liftin of the ground. By the way the movement is how much the camber, caster, toe moves from full comp.
