Subject: altenator output IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 dodge dakota slt v6 with air, power windows, etc.
I recently was stranded with a dead electrical system. After towing the car home, i charged the battery overnight. I still couldn't start the vehicle the next morning.
I replaced the battery. It started and seemed to be okay.
I took it to Autozone to test the system to see if it was charging okay. They said the alternator/regulator was faulty (output was 13 volts w/ 35 amps).
Autozone says the altenator should be putting out 137 amps. The Mitsubishi dealer (where I bought the vehicle w/ warranty) says the 35-40 amps it is putting out is normal. Presumably this a a stock quadcab pickup. Who is right?
Thanks,
Ed

How did these guys ' measure/analyze ' the output??
If all available acc's were not activated , the [35 amps ] may be OK ! Is battery getting enough
now to start you again ? Does signals slow down
when you are stopped at a light with headlights
and air on ??

Message: That is completely wrong. 35 amps can not run a truck, or a Honda for that matter. I have the crappiest stock alternator you can get in my 2000 Quad Cab V6, and i had AutoZone check it for free, and it read 92 amps. I believe you're going to have to replace it.

Message: They're both right, if typical current flow is 35 amps, but max output is over 100. You need to know which they're talking about.

Message: Bad ground! I had a problem like that a nubmer of years ago. Changed the battery, the altenator, fuses, anything I could think about. Finally found the problem to be a bad ground wire to the engine block. It was there and the vehicle would start if the battery was strong but the altenator wouldnt charge it worth a damn. I removed the offending wire and put on a strong 1 guage wire and the car ran like a dream. Battery wasnt bad, altenator wasnt bad nothing, just the friggin gound. Now, its always the first thing I check!!!
my 2 cents
