Subject: P0138 Downstream oxygen sensor IP: Logged
Message: Hello all!
First of all I would like to say that this is a GREAT forum, and has helped me to no end in dealing with my latest Dakota problem.
I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport, 3.9L, 4x4, 5spd. Recently it started losing power going up hills and the Check Engine light came on. At the advice of people on the board, I took it to AutoZone to read the codes. The code came back P0138 which is the Downstream oxygen sensor overvolt. My question is where is this sensor? I looked under the truck, and the only O2 sensor that I could see looked like it was on top of the cat. I heard that there should be one before and one after the cat, but the only one I could find was one that was on top of the cat.
Can anyone clarify this? This is Georgia vehicle (So not California emissions). Any assistance would be most appreciated! Again, many, many, thanks to DodgeDakotas.com and AutoZone!
Please email me at rgriffor [at] yahoo [dot] com if you would like, or I will be checking the forums often!

Message: The down stream O2 sensor is located in the exhaust just after the catalytic convertor and before the muffler.

Message: ok.. I went down and was able to look at it closer after my exhaust cooled down, and the O2 sensor I found is indeed mounted on the back end of the cat between the cat and muffler. Just for future reference, where is the upstream/front one?

Message: Give it a couple days it should turn off when the OBDII no longer sees a problem, if not, do a search for "resetting MIL"

Message: After I read the codes via the igition on/off method the MIL went out. I haven't noticed a decline in driveability but I rarely tow heavy loads and I drive like an old lady according to my wife. Gas mileage is usually 22+ mpg.
Thanks for the reply, I will be coming back to this forum often just to check in.

Try resetting the PCM and wait to see if the code reappears. If it does post back here. I've searched the webz a little and found the code and meaning but nothing as to what causes it or how to correct it.
