Subject: common problem? IP: Logged
Message: Hi, everyone. I have a '94 Dodge Dakota Sport (hence the name) with a 3.9 and a 5-spd, with 124,300 miles. Here's my problem: The engine sputters randomly, as though if there's a miss. It mostly happens while accelerating, but it will occur while cruising too. The funny thing is that it will only sputter when there's less than a half tank of gas left. This doesn't happen everytime I acclerate, but only certain times. Does anyone else have this type of problem and what can I do to fix this? Thanks for you help; I appreciate it.

Message: i have two 89 dakota's w/ the 3.9l and a 94 w/ a 5.2, and one of my 3.9's sputters (actually makes it sound like it has a wicked cam in it) when i just barely rest my foot on the gas, i haven't had any problems with it missing accelorating before though.

Message: From what I've read...those are signs that your fuel pump is going bad. Since your pump is cooled by the gasoline in the tank, when the tank begins to run low, the pump overheats and begins to cut out.

Message: Mine did the same thing too, only not the fuel issue. Mine would do it all the time. Turned out the #6 spark plug was not only gapped wrong, it had NO gap. The bridge was completely shut. Some idiot giving me a tune up had managed to bend the bridge all the way shut while putting it in.
I agree with the others that it is probably a fuel pump issue, because you said it only does it with a half tank of gas or less.......BUT, It couldn't hurt to pop in new spark plugs first. And it's dang sure a whole lot cheaper to try. If it fixes the problem, you've saved about $300, if it doesn't, it's the fuel pump. Then you'll know.

Message: When was the last time it had a tune up (new plugs, wires, cap and rotor)? Could be the fuel pump but as mentioned above, it is a lot cheaper to change these things first before replacing the pump. This happening at half a tank does make one suspicious of the fuel pump, however.

Message: I replaced the spark plugs about a year and a half ago when I first bought the truck, but come to think of it, it's been a while since it had a tune up. I'll take care of the fuel pump issue and see if that's the problem. Thanks for your help, guys.
