 Subject: Front Axle Pinion Seal

Anyone ever have the need to replace the front axle pinion seal on their Dakota? Mine appears to be leaking and I'm wondering how much aggrivation I'm in for if I do it. From what I can see all I have to do is unbolt the driveshaft and push it to the side then somehow get the pinion seal out and new one in place. This is a slightly oversimplified description but you get the gist of it.
Any suggestions?

well, mine is leakin too. my brother who is a mechanic looked at it and said they are very easy to replace. it would take him about 10 minutes he said. just get a seal puller. they look like an evil weapon, but they do a good job. id say give it a shot, new seals only cost about 5-10 bucks anyway. go for it. We have the same problem with our '93 2WD. Only it needs the whole pinion changed. Our problem now is getting it all unhooked. Having trouble getting the steering shaft apart, if we could get that apart then the whole thing will drop off. Any ideas? It's in a tight spot and well rusted.

what steering shaft are you talking about?
if you mean the drive shaft, just use a pry bar and put it between the rear u joint and the yoke on the pinoin. it will pop free with a little bit of force. use some rust penatrator if you have to. do not pull the drive shaft our of the tranny. if you do, some fluid will spill out. just get it off the yoke and put it out of the way, but dont pull the end out of the tranny unless you want to drain it and put new fluid.
