is the 3.9 V6 a good motor? can you expect 150K miles out of them? i know it depends on how it was maintained, but on average are they a reliable motor?

It's not a good motor in terms of power / size, but I'm at 115K miles of *hard* driving and I've never had anything go wrong with the engine. If anything did go wrong, you can get it rebuilt for $800-1000, brand spanking new.
I poped an ignition coil once, when I slammed the throttle on a hill, but that's it.
Depends on what you mean by reliable, though. What part of the engine? I haven't had any problems with the pistons, valves, blah blah.

so far. My 2001 has 170,000 miles on it, and it is still running like a champ. My personal view is this, if you spend a few bucks on a few mods, the more these engines like it. For example I have
V8 TB, Harland Sharp 1.7's, CAI, Dynomax muffler, 3923's. Genrally it is what I call the basic mod package. Soon to come will be the headers...
BTW avg mpg with my dak, anywhere from 22 to almost 24 on the highway, speeds over 75 mpg.

My 93 is still strong at 167,000 miles. I routinely break the tires free pulling out of the parking lot at work... I don't take it easy.

My 98CC is still runnin like a champ at 189k, no rebuilds. Still runs like it was new. I have done the usual routine maintanance but other than that, its a great engine!

my 95 dak has almost 170K on it and still running strong. i did have to put a new egr valve on it, after the converter went out and blew the valve off. was only an $85 part. regular oil changes, rubber, i'm planning on at least another 150K!!

My '95 Dakota. 3.9L has 190,000 miles on it-oil changes every 3500 miles-gas mileage is 23-24 per gal. highway-19-20 city. The only problem I've had- I bruised some nuckles changing the belt. I'm very pleased with this truck.

99 dakota, 80,000 miles, if you rode with me you'd swear my throttle body butteflies were welded wide open, i dog it constantly
only things that have gone bad were a couple sensors, no engine problems other than that belly pan leak

I worked for a security company that had 5 dak's all 2000 3.9l v6's all driven every nite and quite hard i must say, all of them had way over 200,000kms on them and not one of them had any ball joint or mechanical problems with them, only service,was regular oil changes and tires every 50k, around 100-150kms put on them every nite. and when the finaly sold them off they where still running strong.

I HAVE A 94 DODGE DAKOTA SLT EXT. CAB AUTOMATIC THAT I RUN EVERYDAY PRETTY HARD AND JUST ABOUT EVERYDAY I DO AT LEAST 80 M.P.H., AND IT HAS RIGHT NOW 284+ THOUSAND MILES ON IT. THE FUNNY THING IS IT NEVER SMOKES, REALLY. ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN I STEP ON IT YOU MIGHT SEE A LITTLE GREY SMOKE BUT THAT'S IT. BUT I KEEP THE OIL CHANGED ON IT, AND I USE ONLY VAVOLINE FULL SYNTHETIC OIL.

i have two 89 dakota's w/ 3.9l 5spds in them each, one is 4x4 and the other is 2x4, the two wheel drive rig i bought for 500 bucks, they thought they blew the head gasket(and still put 5000 miles on it pumping antifreeze thru it) so i pulled the motor and ripped it apart when i bought the truck, and the left bank head was cracked. so i got a motor at a junk yard for 400 bucks, slapped it in, and its doing great, the motor has 175k miles, and my 4x4 has 125k miles, both of them never had any mechanical probs.
however at about 120k miles, on both trucks my starters went to crap on me... a little bitter about that..

My 95 4x4 has 117000 I love the truck,but the power absolutly sucks. My gas milage is nothing to write home about either,it's not bad I get 16mpg. highway or city it doesn't matter. You can't run O/D it will constently down shift,due to lack of power. It will not high idle up when you first start it in the morning,the rest of the day it's fine. Any suggs. ??????????????

The 3.9 is the same V6 Chrysler has been making since the 60's. It's a runner. Unless you do something to F it up, it's going to probably outlast you.
It's not quite as good as the Slant 6, but the Slant 6 could never do unleaded fuel very well.

Slow4X4dak- i'm taking out my AX-15 tranny and putting in the nv3500 behind the 5.9. It should work and i will find out for sure probley this spring.
