Subject: oil filter change IP: Logged
Message: Changing the oil in my 92 v6 dakota is a headache. How do you get the oil filter in and out of there? I bought the truck used and I see the previous owner cut away part of the falange on the transmition bracket. Ive spent an hour trying to get the filter out of there. Supposedly the fram ph16 is the correct filter. The only waay I have found to get it in and out is to losen the tranmition mount. I['ve searched this site and cann't find any threads on this topic. Which makes me think I've got to be doing something wrong.

Message: I've read that if you can't get an oil filter out, try taking a really long, fairly thick screwdriver and litteraly puncture the screwdriver through the oil filter.......all the way through, then use the screwdriver to unscrew the oil filter. I have no idea if this would help you or if you can even get to it good enough to try it, but I'm only offering what I have read here.

Message: I'm not having a problem unscrewing it. It's physically getting the oil filter in and out of the engine compartment.

Message: Is your truck a four wheel drive? On my '91 2 wheel drive, after you get it unscrewed if you don't hang onto it, it would fall right onto the ground. Something is different with your truck than mine, the biggest pain on mine is when the filter breaks loose the oil runs down my hand onto my arm.

Message: It's four wheel drive. There is a bracet that attaches to the transmition by one bolt and the the suspension suport on the frame by two bolts that really gets in the way. If the previous owner had not cut away part of the falange on this support I have no idea how the filter would come out of there. The support or bracket doesn't look after market. but it makes me wonder because if it was on every 92 you would here a lot of guy b@#$^ing about it.
The only other thing I can think of is that it's the wrong size filter listed for the truck.

Message: I got that problem. It will pass down with little clearance between that bracket and the vacuum lines that go to the locking hub. But it is tight. There is an update that replaces that bracket...look for a tsb for that issue.
