FRAM hi-performance air filter over k&n's cold air intake?
q: which to get when you got a (un-modded)2001dak/spt clubcab w/over 74k miles? looking to improve engine performance and possibly the mileage 13mpg in city and 14/15mpg on the hwy. any other suggestions would be appreciated, not looking to break the bank, but am willing to sacrifice some to improve my trucks' performance. thanks in advance.

I agree with 92dak. I thought I was getting not bad mileage, then one day I was looking in my throttlebody and it was yellow in color. So I cleaned it and what a difference. I went from 14-15 mpg city/highway to 17-19 city/highway. I did not notice and performance difference, it did however idle smoother. I have allways used the fram air filters. I think the k&n are to expensive.

Throttle body cleaning: Did you acutally pull the throttle body off or did you leave it on and spray and clean w/o removing it? What works best, my '91 is a little dirty, get about 14-16 city and 20 highway, once 21 highway. Not super great.

I was lazy and left the throttlebody on and sprayed it until it was clean, took about 3/4 of the can. I talked to a mechanic I know and he told me as long as you go for a long drive after you clean the tb this method will not hurt anything and it also has the added benefit of cleaning th O2 sensor.

I wouldn't trust cleaning one of them suckers with the tb still on... the belly pan gaskets on Dakotas are already pretty weak. I wouldn't wanna chance breaking it down and having to replace it. Just my opinion...

93redDakota...if you remove the throttle body, just get a big ole can of carb cleaner and spray it off. Make sure you let it dry completely before you reinstall it. If you leave it on, you'll wanna use a can of throttle body cleaner. Also don't reuse your old tb gasket...sometimes you can get away with it, but at less than 2 bucks for a new one, why risk it?

You do need to try to get cooler air in to intake.
If stock setup is not drawing cool ( outside of
engine compartment ) air , then you can use
some 4 inch pvc pipe to extend the ' snout ' to where it can get that cool air.
