Subject: Foglight install info needed IP: Logged
Message: I got a 2K Dakota and it didnt come with the foglights and the foglight valence. I was thinking of getting an OEM replacement valence. What kind of mounts do I need? Where can I get them and about how much do they run? Ive heard you can tap into the existing wiring on the truck even though it didnt come with the lights. I think I need a relay. How do I go about doing this and has anyone had any experience with donig this. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Message: You can buy the foglights and wiring harness from the dealer for I think about $160. I bought a set from www.autobarn.com for $60 that comes with a wiring harness and a switch you can mount under the dash. The Diamond Blue Round Light Kit includes the wires, switches and connectors to provide your vehicle with a light that projects a whiter, brighter light for superior visibility! The computer modeled reflector uses entire surface area to project light, making the reflector 98.5% efficient compared to the conventional 50%. The unique optic free "blue" glass provides a whiter, brighter more defined beam pattern for maximum visibility. Kit comes with two (2) H-3/55W lamps that meet SAE requirements.

Message: I just got some Pilot foglights for my 2001 Dakota.
Brian,
You will want to measure the hole first, it should be a 4" hole (that's what mine was). I got a 4" hole saw and put it in my cordless drill and just drilled right throuhg the valence. I cleaned up the edges with a Dremel tool. You can check out pics of the install on my website.

Message: The lights I got had mounting brackets already on them. The only thing I had to get was electrical box mounting brackets (see the photo on my website) which I got at the local hardware store for really cheap, a few bucks at the most. I think you will need to pick out a set of lights and see what they come with and go from there and just play around with them. I had to experiment a few times to get things just the way I wanted them.

Message: The foglight that I installed, Pilot PILPL119X is a kit that is made for
the Dakota. They came with mounting brackets, and
the install was very easy. To install the lights,
I used a utility knife, and cut the valence as close to round as I could.
I then used a dremel tool with a sanding wheel to smooth out the edges.
I mounted the relay in the engine compartment on a battery tray screw, then ran the wire inside
and have it connected to the fuse block so that I have power when the key is on.
The switch is mounted to the left of the steering wheel.
The lights are very bright, and I am happy with the install. One annoying item was that the power wires for the lights are white. I spent a few bucks, and covered the wires with black plastic wire tubing. The black looks better in the engine compartment.

Message: Your installation sounds similar to mine. I too got Pilots, but not that same model number, but they work just fine in my Dak, except I had to make the slight mods i spoke of earlier with the mounting. I would recommend Pilots to anyone.
P.S. I did have one light burn out already. Just went down to the local AutoZone and picked up a set of H3 bulbs and replaced it in about 5 minutes.

Message: Wcomea,
I did not to any drilling in the firewall. I am not 100% sure (it has been a while and I can't run out and look at my truck at this moment) but I think I ran the wiring right up next to the sheetmetal and up through to the fush box. It took some time to fish everything through, but it can be done. If you go to the driver's side of the master cylinder right up by the sheet metal you can fish the wires through up by the fuse panel. I hooked it up to a fuse that only gets power when the key is turned so I don't forget to shut them off and drain my battery. Hope that helps.

Message: I got mine in today, they look GREAT! If your air dam is like mine, it would be easier to use a 4" hole saw to prepare the holes.
