Message: I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with flares and am going to buy the mopar splash guards. I was wondering what was involved in the installation. Any drilling? Is it difficult?

Message: Took me about an hour to install. Some drilling is required if it is the molded splash guards like I have, you need to drill one hole for each splash guard. The front's you can do by cranking the tires either way and using a short handled screwdriver, but the rears are very hard to finish without taking off the rear wheel, you cannot drill the hole that is needed since it is on the inside near the frame. If you had a very shallow right angle drill, you could do it.
They attach by removing 2 or 3 of the factory flare screws and putting them back in with the guards in place, then you drill one hole and push in a plastic button. So I did my fronts with holes drilled and the rears without holes drilled. When I did the first tire rotation, I drilled the rear holes for each side and pushed in the buttons. They help make the guard a little stronger is all but I would still use them nonetheless.
Another suggestion is do not push the molded edge up tight against flare as they do flex some from the wind and I have noticed they have worn through the paint in some spots:( Making a 1/16" gap should take care of that and still look good without damaging the flare if you where to ever take them off, Live and Learn!

I just installed these myself in about an hour. Yes, the rear guards are a little tricky to put on with the wheels in the way. If you have wheelflares, part of the installation requires removing a screw. Luckily, I had the correct star-like bit for this screw. Even more lucky was that I had a "stubby" racheting screwdriver that accepted this star-like bit. Without these, I would have been removing the wheel.
I also was able to "tap" the one whole per rear guard without removing the wheel. I did this by screwing them in with a slight angle towards the bed of the truck. The screw head isn't as flush as the rest but I refused to remove the wheels. Should work just fine and isn't noticeable.

Message: I have a right angle drill and I took the rear wheels off anyway, it was a little tight. Using an impact wrench and floor jack it was no big deal. I noticed that the diameter of the hole that they wanted you to drill for the button was a little too large so I went smaller on the bit size than they called for. All in all a pretty easy install.
MNTurkeyNut, they call that 'star' bit you were refering to a Torx bit. The size screwdriver or bit needed for this install is a T-20.
