I finally completed my headliner and added it to my web pages. Click on the link in my sig line and then go to interior mods.
I still have to install the sunroof (next spring) That will eliminate the sagging fabric where the overhead console was.

Message: Wow, someone else tried this too! After finding out from the dealer that ALL 2000 Quad Cab replacement headliners came with a cut out for the console, I decided to repair the thing my self (and save about $200). It was quite a learning experience to say the least. Chuck, did you patch the headliner shell before you reupholstered it, or will the future sun roof take this spot??
I have a few tips if anyone else is interested in removing their overhead console for good.

The future sunroof will fill the spot where the console used to be. I would've patched the hole if it wasn't for that. There still might be a small patch towards the windshield I might have to play with after the sunroof goes in, but it's small enough that I'll worry about it afterwards.
What did you do with your headline, RESQready?
OT: Are you involved with EMS? (judging from your screen name) Firefighter/paramedic here ;-)

Message: My overhead console was taking up valuable space. Not only did it vibrate (thus driving me crazy), but the sunglass holder, computer, etc... was of no use to me. Really, I wanted to add a low profile spot light on the roof, and the handle assembly wouldn't fit with the console in place. So, I removed the console, ran some wiring, patched the hole, cut out for the spotlight, reupholstered the headliner, and put it all back together. A lot of work, and it doesn't look like I did a thing! Which is good I guess -- you can't see the patch job.
And to answer your other question, I'm an NREMT and used to be involved with a Sheriff's Rescue team as a technical rescue specialist (until I moved out of county). I was also a training coordinator/instructor for rope rescue, swiftwater rescue, emergency medical response, and incident management. On the side, I did test evaluation for the National Assoc. of Search and Rescue.

Message: RESQready - What are you doing with your console??? I want one, you feel like selling it to me cheap?
Also Chuck, I want to do a headliner that matches the door panels, i hate the light grey color, it clashed with my interior. Any idea where I can get one, or the best way to make one. Ill also want to change the color of all the plastic up there to match (you think adhesion promoter and paint??)

Jonas,
The easiest way to change the color of your headliner is to use some fabric paint/dye. Dupli-Color makes some that works very well on plastic (very little prep work and no priming) and moderately well on fabric. I say moderately well because I noticed some absorbtion (sp?) on the sun visors and I will need to recoat. If you don't need your headliner for a couple weeks and don't mind a rough feel for the headliner, then go for it. They make a dark gray and black (that I've seen).
If you want to paint the plastic trim pieces to match, then follow the steps on my painted dash page and you'll be all set. I didn't use adhesion promoter when I did my painting and it's holding up very well. And believe me when I say that I don't take it easy on it ;-)
If you want to paint the headliner (and keep the overhead console) another method that would work (but definitely more time consuming) is to use some fiberglass resin. Apply about three coats (sanding between and after the last coat)of resin and it should be ready for paint. When I blended the transition between the fiberglass and the headliner, the resin stiffened up the headliner carpet enough so it was sandable. And no problems with adhesion.
And then, you could always recarpet the headliner. I used neoprene from www.wetokole.com and it was easy to use. Just be prepared to drop a pretty penny for adhesive.
I don't think Dodge makes a dark headliner for our Daks, but I could be mistaken. I have the Agate interior and the headliner was that light gray. I hated it too ;-)

Message: Jonas,
My overhead console is wrapped up and stored in a box -- not doing me any good, so if you want it, email me and we can work something out. It's light gray, although my interior is agate too (why D/C used this color scheme is beyond me), so I don't know if your plans were to paint it or resell it to someone else. Either way I'll let it go cheap. Its got the little computer (milage, direction, distance til empty, etc...), the garage door opener holder, and the sunglasses holder. BTW, it vibrated because the adhesive that held it up to the roof came loose. A larger piece of double stick tape would solve that.

Message: Jam..those twinkle lights you see in limo's are actually fiber-optics...so if u wanna do that ..your gonna have to store the color wheel and light in the back of the cab somewhere..prolly be able to run the fibers up the back of the cab and up to the headliner

Message: fiberoptics that makes sense. thanks for the info. i found a limo parts website and looked into those fiberoptic twinkle lights. $500 for a plexy pannel with the fiberoptics already in it. that's a little more than i'm willing to put into the truck right now so i think unless a cheeper alturnative is found i'll just scrap the idea.

Message: All you have to do is put lights on one end of the fiber and point the other end where you want the light to show. The light runs right through the fiber. To make the color you put a layer of cellophane between the light and the end of fiber. Make sense? It's really pretty simple. To make flashing colors you make a wheel of several different colors. As it spins the color that the light hits will go through the fiber. so all you would need is a light, a battery, and a color wheel. Then of course you'd have to run the fiber where you wanted it.

Message: Im gonna try and lay some fiber in a design under a clear coat on my custom console and see what it looks like it should light up the strand of fiber...I install fiber communication systems on military bases and we would use a flashlight on one end and see the light on the other ... just never really thought of useing it for lighting designs... thx for the tips
