Subject: fix or buy new? IP: Logged
Message: I got and huge wave in my passenger door (hit and run) :( Would it be more economical to fix it by getting a new door skin or buying a new door? I have rust on the bottom of the door, but it may be fixible? If the skin is a better option... could you give some ideas on where to get them. I have already looked at a new doors and they are real expensive and finding one that's worth a damn in a salvage yard, is like finding bin laden in Afganistan... let me know your opinion. Thanks

Message: A body shop should give you a estimate and depending on your insurance it might be covered. I'd check on both of those things.. If it is covered by insurance check to see what will happen to your premium before you file a claim.

It all depends on the way the rest of your truck looks.
I have a "newish" truck with no dings in it. Therfore, all repairs I make will have to be flawless (or close to it).
If your truck has several small "door dings" or other minor (or major) dents in it, then you would not want to be so picky.
There are very few body shops that can make perfect repairs.
If you want it perfect, replace the sheet metal. It will be expensive. If you want a very good job, seek out a good shop and have it repaired.
If you don't really care, find the cheapest place and just get it done.....

Message: Well I want to go (almost!) flawless. Thats what I'm going for. But the bottom of the doors have rust. Is there a way to fix this? The door skin wont replace it.. The only thing I can come up with is fixing the door skin and welding a peice of sheet medal to make the rusted part new. I think it's to rusty to fix it. Has anyone done this? And unfortunatly the insurance co. won't cover it. Thanks for your help

Message: If it's rusted threw all you can do is weld a piece in it's place.. If it's just surface rust you can sand that off when you go to repaint it. Also when a body shop does a repair where they have to sand and pull out dents they spray a primer over the whole thing and that takes out SMALL imperfections. Like when you pound a dent back into place it's not perfect so they use a thick primer to fix where it isn't perfect. It's not bondo but a primer. I'd still talk to a body shop to see what's going to be less expensive.
