Subject: Custom Grille For Less IP: Logged
Message:
I got a Custom Grille for $15. I went to
WAL-MART and got 4 packs of chrome door trim. I cut it to the right length and put it on my stock grille. It looks pretty good if you cut it right. So if you want a custom grille for a low price try this. If you don't like it you can just take it off. I don't know if it will fit Gen I and Gen II Dakotas or not.

Message: Gee... and I thought I was an original.
I did the same thing. I have a dark paint color, and I quickly ditched the "chrome" SLT grille in favor of a color-matched one, but soon found out that I didn't like it the way it was, so I added the "door molding" trim to the inside of the four grille openings, and it really gives the truck a great new character.
You can see it by clicking on "pictures", then "viewers rides". It's the dark blue one on page 6.

Message: Hey Chris, Mine looks alot like yours except I think that my bars are a little bigger around and I have another bar on the top.
Well I don't have a scanner so I can't send you a pic, but all my friends say that it looks alot better than stock and just as good as a Trenz or other bar grille and really good for just $18. The price went up $3 because I added another bar to the top. For a while I only had 2 bars per hole on the grille, but later I found some black plastic and cut it into pieces so I could have another bar on the top. I just J B Welded the plastic to the bars that go up and down. I'm going to have a friend scan it and then I will forward it to anyone that wants it.

The first thing that you do is go to WAL-MART and buy one pack of chrome door trim. There should have 2 in one pack that are 24 inches long. Cut it to the right length and put it on one of your stock grille bars. If you like it go back to WAL-MART and get 3 more packs of the same door trim, cut it and put it on. There will be a gap at the top of each of the 4 grille openings. If you put 2 bars on it should look like Chris Lambert's truck in readers rides.
If you want another bar on the top you need to find some pieces of black plastic that are about 1 inch tall and at least 1 inch wide(wider is better try to find some that is as long as the grille openings, but smaller pieces will work). Take side cutters and cut a small notch out of the so they will hold themselves on the bars of the grille that go up and down. J B Weld them to these bars. Buy 2 more packs of the door trim and put it on the black platic. It should cost about $18 for the trim.
I first saw this on a 91 S10. The trim was cut crooked and didn't look very good. My friends talked me into trying it. After all it only costs $2.50 for a pack of the trim. Tried it, liked it, bought more,

Message: Hey guys I just got finished putting mine on and I have before and after pics. I even went so far as to put the small pieces in to see what it looked like. Here is the link. http://home.earthlink.net/~smithtoby/_wsn/page4.html
It may take a while to load because the pics are pretty large. Take your pic on what you like best. Let me know which one everybody prefers. Cost around 12 - 15 bucks.

Message: I just wish there was a way to make a "dog cage" color matched look...
Since I have a "Sport" Dakota, I really didn't want to go chrome in the grill... I really wanted something that looks more like a "cage" criss cross look like you see in most Ford 150s. (So it would be practical in keepin' rocks out of the radiator)
Has anyone ever thought about something like this?

Message: Very nice Kraw...
Maybe I should reconsider about that chrome on dark color look...
Since my Dak is of the "Deep Amethyst" variety, I guess I could go chromed out. Maybe it would look even better whenever I get around to adding some chrome or stainless nerf bars.
Thanks for posting those pics... BTW, how long did it take for you to get those SS grills in there (I noticed that you had some partial billets in there before...)

noticed you have a sport, and you also have
the chrome bumper grille that comes on the

Message: I did this way back when I first bought the truck. Was one of the first mods. I think I was one of the first to do it, but that was back in early 98. I had a how to page on my website, but took it down when I redesigned it. Still doesn't look as good as a real grill, billet or mesh.
