Subject: custom cap?

Anyone here ever made a custom bed cap? I have an 02 quad cab 4x4 with a tool box in the bed, I also have chrome tublar rails along the top of the bed. I'm thinking of trying to make some sort of custom cap that will mount inside the bed rail instead on on top so I don't have to remove the chrome bed rails. I'm also interested in making it removable, I wont need to use it all the time but I do make several long trips a year to see family or just travel and fish. I'm also going to be getting a bed extender since i do have the tool box taking up a large chuck of bed real estate.

my ideal requirements :
light weight (modular?)
easy to install or remove (1 or 2 person)
adaptable to make use of bed extender
sturdy - withstand highway speeds
weather proof - why cover if it's not staying dry?

I'm consiering some sort of steel or aluminum frame. I am still looking into what to actually cover the frame with. I thought of canvas but may make something with light guage sheet metal kind of like an actual truck cap. Any other thoughts?

I like the canvas bed covers but all of the vendors I have seen that make them mount to the top of the bed. smallest I've seen takes 1" of bed rail space which I don't have.

A buddy had a '93 CC Dakota; he used aluminum L channeling inside the bed and put 2 pieces of plywood across. He used plywood because he wanted to mount carriers for his mountain bikes on it and put the camping gear and such underneath. It looked great when he painted it.

I'm sure you could do the same with some sheet metal with a little support under it.

I've been thinking about doing this as well... Let me know if you find out anything else! Mine won't be exactly like yours though... thanks!
