 Subject: guage clusters swap

my 98 dakota sport has the guage cluster with no tach, it has the big gas guage instead. i got a whole guage cluster out of a 99 or 00 dakota with the tach and im wondering if anyone has made this swap before, and if there are any other parts i'll need to make the swap correctly. thanks for all your help.

i tried to swap the guage cluster out last night. all the prongs on the plug match up on the back of the cluster, but when i turn the truck on, the check engine light is on. i used the scanner, and the truck doesnt throw out any codes. the high beam light is on until i turn the lights on, and where the odometer reading is supposed to be, it reads the mileage off of the truck i took the guages off of, until i turn it on. then it says "no bus" does anyone have any idea what that means? any help would be appreciated.

The bus terminals in the connector are probably in the wrong positions. Wires and their locations change from year to year. Get a wiring diagram and match up the wires from the harness to the proper locations on the cluster. This may or may not work. The cluster may also need to be "initiated" to work properly. That would be a dealer service. And you may be stuck with the mileage from the old truck...(which is illegal). I can't remember if you can reprogram mileage at the dealer or if it has to be burned in from the manufacturer on that particular cluster.

well i have a similar question. I have an 00 cc slt 3.9 my buddy also has an 00 slt 4.7 we have identical everything from digital overhead to foglights. cept steering wheel. Any way, his has the digital gear indicator and mine is just a little red pointer thingie. Can i swap out my cluster get it programmed with my mileage and run with it, so that way ill have the green digital gear read out? e mail me at jmaack727@yahoo.com if you got anything for me.

The trucks with the digital gear readout has a extra sensor on the transmission that tells the digital readout what position the selector is in

well would it be just a matter of getting that sensor? i mean i was looking at the trucks wiring by the tranny. i found a plug i jumped it and 4 wheel drive light came on. I mean there has to be all the wiring there somewhere right?
